Indeed. Given that no one was living in Midgar during AC, it's not unreasonable to think it'd be overgrown 498 years later.

just pointing out that if you're going to live somewhere, you'd make sure to keep it as liveable environment (for humans at least).

and all this is under the assumption that they didnt abandon midgar--if they did then the point is moot anyway.

Kind of hard to do that when the Lifestream was what held up Midgar to begin with and when AC rolled around the Lifestream started fucking people with Geostigma.

It's quite possible that you'd abandon MIdgar after the city was the cause of so much trouble.
