^She does great as Genkai in YYH, well IMO. She also did a decent Freeza back in the day when she was literally voicing him for the show ONLY DURING MID-FREEZA SAGA when she was using this different tone of voice for him that semi-fit. Then all of a sudden during Budokai 1 and onward(including the filler saga of Otherworld) she uses the "granny" voice everyone knows dub Freeza for.
Funny how dub Freeza's voice is only remembered as that even though it was never done that way in the original saga where Freeza's from. XD

I quite liked the deep voice that 2nd form Freeza had, it's his final form and first form voices that really grate.

Freeza sounds like an old hag now too in the anime, thanks to the redub.
Anyway, Linda Young was pretty amazing as Genkai, and since Genkai and Kureha are pretty similar people, I wouldn't be bothered if they cast her for that role.
You have to remember Simian, that there's nothing wrong with a voice as long as it's used properly. Everyone called Freeza an old hag, so what could be a better role for Linda Young than... an old hag? Linda Young isn't a bad VA by any means.

I have no idea who Genkai and Kureha are. All I know Linda Young for is dub Freeza.
What about Chris Sabat? He usually manages to stir up pretty strong reactions from most, even though I felt he was far superior to Drummond.

The reason why I dislike Sabat's performances is because they all tend to go to the "RAWR FEAR ME I HAVE A DEEP BOOMING VOICE!!" route. It's worth noting that his smaller performances are actually better than his main roles (Kami, Grandpa Gohan, Armstrong from FMA).
However, behind the scenes Sabat was one of the people who made Funi to what it is today: one of the best anime dubbing companies out there. And his Zoro is godly. He started off akwardly, but after fan complaints he reinvented the role by using his natural voice for once and it sounds awesome. Not forced at all and this time around he's actually stealing the show with his performances.

Just watched a few clips of the anime on Youtube, and it's quite frightening really;
Zoro sounds like Piccolo, Usopp is Krillin, Sanji is Mirai Trunks...it's very odd, like spending time with a new friend you've known all your life.

Sonny Strait's Usopp is hilarious. He's like an over the top Krillin (also note that Mayumi Tanaka voices Luffy with an over the top Kuririn voice). Eric Vale's Sanji is eh... he's trying to sound like some kind of badass, but he just isn't.
And dub Nami is spot on.

Dub Nami's alright, but then she's not got much dialogue in the scenes I've been watching. I agree with you about Vale though, he's just a little...meh. Perfectly competent, but rather bland.

I think someone's been splitting / moving the first few posts around. Didn't Buu make the original topic?

The original topic was about Chou needing to watch One Piece. The topic is now about you two reading it. So I just moved some stuff around.

Well, you must be fairly happy with that, right? Chou may not be reading it, but Nonny and I are. I'm quite enjoying it, it's certainly much more light hearted than DBZ was.

Oh, and about the video;
Yes, that was pretty funny, but that's just because of the script, not Vale's delivery. Sanji's quite amusing at times, and the funniest part of the vid is still Zoro making Luffy drink the booger.

The tone seems about the same overall. It's just got a much better balance.

I've just finished chapter 153, where...
Spoiler:
Vapulo got his arse handed to him by Luffy, and Chopper has been chased away fromn the castle by the Kureha.
The whole arc was pretty dull really, especially the overlong flashback.
It's a shame, as the Arlong Arc was great, yet the past 60 or so chapters, Little Garden and the Drum Island sagas have been a little slow moving. Here's hoping things pick up soon.

didn't you like logue town?
but anyway arabasta arc is good, i'm guessing the manga moves faster then the anime at that point
and the skypiea arc is where things start getting really good and you can see what potential the series really has

Just finished volume 9. How the hell is Arlong Park boring?! It's a character history, just like everything so far. Except it's the best one yet.
