DBZ episode 184

Japanese title: “The Tragic No. 16!! An Enraged Super Gohan Begins Taking Action”
English title: “Cell Juniors Attack!”

Well, this is the episode where Funi ruined a scene so much that it went from a beautiful scene, possibly the best scene in the entire series, to a generic, boring and bland transformation scene that just really sucks.

First, there’s the innner monologue. In the original, he is silent, but in the dub Gohan starts talking to himself about how he needs to unlock his power to save everyone. THAT’S NOT HOW GOHAN’S INNER POWERS HAVE WORKED, NOR WILL THEY WORK THAT WAY NOW! Gohan’s powers are released in a sudden explosion of anger, of which he himself has no control over. No stupid crap about letting it slip. Just like in real life, when you enter a rage fit, you don’t think “time to rage now!”, you just start punching everything in your sight, without using your mind at all.

Then there’s the horrible dub music. Stupid shitty elevator music that we’ve heard a thousand times already. In the original a song is played in the background, sung by Hironobu Kageyama. It’s a great song, and perfect for this scene. I don’t feel like posting the lyrics, but it’s about an evil soul appearing, releasing your well of power and fighting with all the strength you have. But Funi doesn’t realise what good means so they fuck over the whole scene with their shit.

Then the narrator cuts in immediately after the initial transformation. The narrator’s tale is actually quite epic and gets you fired up for the next episode. He’s pretty much the only saving grace of this whole debacle. ...he does say that Gohan is 11 years old though.

Funi changed the part where Cell says that he’ll survive if the nucleus in his head stays intact to something about how every one of his cells have a line on his own. Excellent.

In the dub Vegeta is mad at Goku because according to him he’s the reason Trunks died. In the original he just talks about how Goku (and Gohan) won’t be the ones that kill Cell, but it will be him.

About Trunks’ death, the lines about how he’s going to make it and that he won’t die are dub lines. It’s quite obvious that Trunks is a goner.

The great cyborg cover-up continues all troughout the episode and then suddenly... A ROBOT CAN HAVE A TWIN BROTHER?! Right. And of course no explanation is given at all.

We start off great with the announcer. This was when Kyle Hebert first started doing the narration and it sounds absolutely horrible. He’s clearly imitating Monster Truck Announcer and.. well.. it sucks. Too bad because Hebert’s current announcer voice is great.

To be consistent, Funi decided that every Kai needs a horrible lispy voice.

Luckily for us, East and South Kai have good voices after all.

Wait.. they can say hell as a place where villains go, but they can’t use it as a curse? WHAT’S THE BLOODY DIFFERENCE?!
