Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Empty

Once again, another sequel that fixes what was wrong with the first game but also gets rid of a lot of what was good about the first game.

The best thing about the first game was the free roaming run. You had a sandbox to run around in and wreck shit. You could pick just about anything up and use it as a weapon, transform at will, searching for arbitrary collectibles (I'm a fan of that by the way), and fight off the military. If a cop car saw you as a giant robot, they would open fire, and if you returned fire it would escalate. Eventually you'd be flinging trees at helicopters, great fun. The worst thing about the first game was lack of content. There were only 4 maps, only 1 of which was any real fun, and no character selection. You had to play as whatever character had to be used for the current mission. Which meant always playing as Bumblebee, pretty much.

RotF solves those problems. I've only played a few missions, but there appears to be a lot more maps, although in exchange they are smaller. Mission are also not character exclusive, so you can pick who you want to play as. There is still a free roam option for each map as well, but you have to unlock it by completing all the missions on that map. However, the free roaming is crap. Nothing happens. You blow shit up and no one comes after you. Plus, you can't pick things up anymore, which was half the fun. The environments seem less destructible than in the first game too.

Hell no. That looks even more linear than RotF. The first movie game but with a ton of content would be the perfect template for a Transformers game.

But it's actually a good game. It doesn't need free roam, it's a freaking war shooter, one with diverse and long levels at that with new things at every turn to keep you interested. It's already the perfect Transformers game. And content-wise it isn't bad either. There's collecting symbols, escalation(with multiplayer co-op) which is the standard mode where you and your friends beat wave after wave of enemies in a fun setting, other obligatory multiplayer modes and so on.

Sounds like standard TPS with transformer skins. It's not what I want.

It's a little more interesting than that. That's not say there isn't any generic TPS stuff in the game(it's a damn shooter after all) but considering they don't make you just run and gun through crap over and over and actually make you do different things throughout each level makes it refreshing. Transforming and flying through space avoiding obstacles, destroying giant fucking weapons and infiltrating a big transformer kicks ass, man.

Actually, I'm feeling a lot better thanks to some perscription meds from the doctor. Still not fully 100% percent, but I'm nowhere near as crabby as I was several days ago.

I was just poking fun at what seemed to be an anti-linearity mindset. Freeroam is nice and all, but I'm starting to feel that it's starting to cripple the narrative of many games. The more one can travel mindlessly, the less one seems to be able to focus on the plot.

Plus, on a planet like Cybertron, free roam would kinda stink considering how much of a clusterfuck of scrap the planet is, the game's fine the way it was done. I wouldn't mind it in the sequel if they make one though, since it'd most likely be on Earth.

You implied it or at least it sounded as if you did. Anyway, whatever WFC is fine as it is and I'm glad with how great it turned out. If it gets a sequel, I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Wisdom teeth are bothering me, so I'll be getting them out on the 21st. Direct pain from them has stopped, but now I've gotten swollen glands under my jaw; it hurts to swallow, hurts to chew, and I can only open my mouth about half way. At least, that's how it has been for the past few days. I've gotten some meds from the doctor and they've been helping a lot. This morning, the "pain while swallowing" issue is down to a mere irritation and I can open my mouth slightly wider.

Transformers begs for a good sandbox game though. The whole point of the sandbox genre isn't really to have freedom and non-linearity within the story, it's there so you have something to do when you don't want to do a mission. That's perfect for Transformers, and the first movie game showed that. All that needed was a few more good maps and wide variety of playable characters and it would have been great. The suburbs was the best map in the first game, which I suppose is why they used it three times, but the others weren't that great. The city was a bit dull. The military base in the desert where you played as Blackout was cool, but again, you could only play that level as Blackout.

This is making me wish I still had the first game.

But still, WFC itself works the way it is. When they get on Earth in the second game, maybe they can do it sandbox-style. Although either way would be fine for me considering I'll know it'd be decent no matter what, so long as High Moon's developing it.
