Margaret Atwood's thoroughly excellent novel has been adapted into a series, and you should all watch it.
I'm a big fan of the book, so I had pretty high expectations going in, but I think they killed it. The story-telling, updating/adapting, acting, and craft were all fantastic, I highly recommend it.
In a dystopian society where birthrates plummet, a group of religious fanatics take over America, creating the theocratic nation of Gilead. Women are controlled utterly, and procreation is comodified to the extent of enforced surrogacy. This is the story of one of these slave-surrogates, a handmaid named Offred (property of Fred), and her struggle in this world.
