What weapon did you use to do the bounty?

The high level Strikes won't even let me join - with the level difference, enemies are actually immune to my attacks! I've only seen a Hawkmoon in PvP, where it was mowing me down. Didn't look (visually) as cool as the Thorn though.

The factions sell some nice weapons, but for now you'd be clearing the lvl 24 strikes and doing the Vanguard's bounties for reputation. Then buy an exotic from Xur and three legendary from the Vanguard.

Thorn is kinda mediocre at the moment, but it'll get buffed eventually. Pocket Infinity and Invective are better weapons, so keep an eye out for their bounties.
This is probably the hardest bounty to complete. Voidwalker is better for this bounty as energy drain, grenades and bomb count as void kills and I recommend using the shotgun and blink or the dash, slide, shotgun strategy. At least that's how I did it.

I started a new Hunter to be able to do extra Weekly strikes and get extra strange coins.

I've seen it in action, and even if it's not as good as other Exotics it is far superior to anything else in my locker.  Are the other two Hand cannons as well?  I chose the Thorn bounty over another two, did I make a mistake?

Those count as Void kills?  Didn't think of that.  Great advice, thanks.

i used an old shotgun & a rocket launcher on control, when you get heavy ammo you can blast the centre of a control zone & get 2 or 3 kills in 1 hit

The mythoclast is subject to the same rules as everything else in PvP, not sure what you mean by this. Also you can't queue for rumble with a foretell larger than 3 so boosting the bounty, while still possible, wouldn't be quote that easy.

Fusion rifles are generally going to be much better than shotguns for the bounty, as well as in general, because of their greater effective range though they are somewhat harder to use. Try to learn the maps and 'pre-charge' the gun so that you can instantly shoot someone when you or they come around a corner. Good fusion rifle players tend to completely dominate PvP and the skills required (map awareness and knowledge) will make you better in general.

Personally I lucked out and had the void damage auto rifle, pre nerf, when I was going for Thorn so I was able to complete the whole thing in an hour or two, even without that though it's still relatively attainable and you do only need to get a 0.5 k/d to eventually complete it.

The hawkmoon when fully upgraded has 3 overpowered shots in a chamber of 13, it doesn't have damage over time but with 13 bullets it has a much better damage to reload ratio than the thorn

i seen chou's video of the mythoclast, never seen it in action myself, thats where i was getting my info. Also i was just assuming with the rumble tactic although even with 3 he could still get a fair few points every game

Weapon damage is not completely normalised in PvP, the impact stat makes a difference. The mythoclast also is a fusion rifle so it uses a different set of base stats than other auto rifles - this is where the higher damage came from. These days of course the weapon has been nerfed to the point where most high end scout and auto rifles are better in almost every way though hopefully the buff, whenever that happens, will make it worth using again.

There are two more exotic hand cannons, a legendary sold by a vendor (The devil you know) and an arc one found in the raid that are certainly better than the Thorn. I think it is currently good only for PvP, but Bungie has announced that it's getting buffed. Xur sells the best exotics anyway.

Once you're done with the Crucible, you'll have to beat the moon strike at lvl 26. That's what makes this bounty hard.

ill help with that strike when you get it because it is harder than anything else ive done in this game

Yeah, don't think I'd be doing a level 26 strike on my own!

Is it possible the bounties will appear again, or am I out of luck having done one already? Or is there a set (and presumably very low) chance that any bounty turn-in can prompt the appearance of an exotic bounty?

The latter, so just keep turning them in. IIRC, I've gotten five exotic bounties so far, but the pocket infinity and the machine gun one have only shown up once; it's always been thorn, invective and bad juju (a crappy pulse rifle).

I've done the Xyor mission twice and I honestly had an easier time when I went solo.

Ye they come bk, ive read online its a 2% chance of getting one every time you hand in a bounty although im not sure of the exact figure

These exotics are generally considered the best for PvE, so buy them if you get the chance:

Primary

Suros Regime (autorifle), Mida multi-tool (scout rifle), Hawkmoon (hand cannon), Last Word (hand cannon)
However, I wouldn't use a primary exotic since you can obtain excellent legendary weapons with elemental damage from the raid.

Special

Ice Breaker (solar sniper that regenerates ammo), Patience and Time (arc sniper with plenty ammo, great stability and an invisibility perk; I used this for the nightfall)
Fusion rifles (legendaries or exotics like the Pocket Infinity and Plan C) of each element are also useful for taking out the shields.

Heavy

Gjallahorn (or whatever it's called, the solar rocket launcher)

Xur can sell all of them except for Hawkmoon and Pocket Infinity. I may have missed some good ones.

super good advice heavy machine gun with solar damage, has 58 bullets in the chamber & when upgraded has real fast reload + almost all missed shots go straight back into the chamber

The Last Word, despite being the coolest weapon in the game, is pretty bad in PvE compared to any other good HC like Hawkmoon, Fatebringer, The Devil You Know or Lord High Fixer. It is excellent in PvP though. Super Good Advice has a cool effect but fast LMGs are not as good as slow ones so you're better off with The Swarm, Zombie Apocalypse, Thunderlord, the Iron Banner LMG etc...

Lord high fixer has been on my to do list since I saw it on the cruciblevanguard menu when I was level three!

After three rounds in control, I'm only got forty three out of the required five hundred points. This is going to take a while.

Oh, this is fucking bollocks.

Every other member of the enemy team is already rocking Lendaries or Exotics, and I simply can't compete. My fucking score is going down.

I am atrocious at using the fusion rifle. My K/D is hovering around 0.50, meaning that after five games I'm on 65/500 points. Fuck this, I can't be arsed. I play games to have fun, not grind this shit out for seven or eight hours for one fucking gun.

I've seen lots of people dominate PvP games against good players with blue guns and armor, outside of a couple of cases (Suros, old Mythoclast etc) it shouldn't hold you back if you're against players of reasonably equal skill. Mods on weapons are way more important than the weapon itself in PvP and blues get just as many as legendaries and exotics.

If you're not having fun you should stop but I wouldn't abandon the bounty unless you're 100% sure you'll never do it, Thorn is a really cool weapon conceptually and could potentially be very good after the buff, instead of just being very good for Gunslinger hunters like it is now.

Don't give up. Perhaps you should wait until you find a fast fusion rifle or a shotgun with better range.

Another thing to try would be figuring out who the best player on your team is and following them around assisting/stealing all their kills. I believe assists count for the bounty and it'll probably help you die less too.
