Joss Whedon made her an A-lister during his Astonishing run.

She was one of the main inspirations for Buffy.

Oh. I forgot anything Joss Whedon does is automatically great.

Everything except Firefly.

And Kitty was already an awesome character before Whedon came in. He just introduced the great rivalry with Emma Frost.

Firefly was good, but we're forgetting the main issue here.

Jubilee is not a likeable character at all. She has no good attributes. She's just annoying.

He's not neccearily evil, he's just willing to sacrifice children for his "cause", shoot Captain America in the back and threaten to kill the mayor of the city that welcomed him with open arms.

Alright. I'm gonna read some of these comics. Which X-Men comics do you recommend?

My three favourite runs are:

Uncanny X-Men by Chris Clairmont (the classic stories like Dark Phoenix and stuff, starts at issue 93 and reaches its high at around 214, everything after that is boring)
New X-Men by Grant Morrison (complete revamp, good starting point if you don't want to read the old stuff)
Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon (sort of a sequel to what Morrison did)

That's enough to keep you going for a while. If you want to get caught up with what's currently going on you need to read the following events:

House of M (Scarlet Witch is nuts and changes reality)
Messiah CompleX (mutant messiah babby)
Second Coming (mutant messiah babby all grown up)
Schism (Wolvie vs. Cyke)
