| For the most part it's fine. A little dull and uninteresting, although that fault belongs to the poorly done introduction, failing to immerse the viewer into the film's bizarre world by throwing you right into the conflict without making you care about the characters.
But I had no idea Mr. NONONONONONONO voiced a character in this. Shit just got real.

| Nausicaa is a terrible film that spits on pretty much everything that made the book so great (so it's kind of like Akira, except worse).
Mr. NONONONONONONO is Shia LeBitch.

| I didn't know you disliked the film too. I actually refrained myself from criticising the film after I was done watching considering I thought you'd be bothered as you're a Miyazaki fan.
I really don't understand why everyone speaks highly of this one, there's nothing that outstanding about it.

| Because goddamn weeaboos don't read goddamn manga so they don't know which version actually got all that praise in the first place. Goddammit. | |

| Just like some nerds are all getting a boner over the Watchmen movie, when it's the actual comic book that was a brilliant masterpiece, while the movie was a godawful mess made by a hack who didn't understand the book he was adapting and a fan of. | |

| Now I recently checked out Ponyo. It was even more boring and lousy than Totoro was. Half of the film was just dull filler and contrived, stupid whimsicalness while the characters did nothing interesting. The rest of the movie is focused on some world crisis nonsense that was underplayed and ultimately had a really weak resolution. It didn't help that, once again, Studio Ghibli failed to introduce and flesh out the characters early on well to make us care about them, and that Ponyo herself is an obnoxious, noisy little brat. | |

| I think this guy on AP explained Totoro the best (and he HATES anime with a passion, he's that guy who used to have that Colonel avatar) - Quote :
- Absolutely amazing. This is being a kid in a nutshell. I loved how it didn't feel the need to force in a Hollywood plot (which is what made Laputa so....ehhh) for no reason and just let itself be a bunch of magical slice of life scenes. It had crazy theraputic qualities to it as well that I can't quite explain. It reminded me of a sweeter stranger Calvin and Hobbes kind of. And it felt like a real self force, the last two felt like the product of a guy currently engrossed in an epic comic making side things with some basing in that comic. Here you can tell Miyazaki really wanted to make this movie, and it had nothing to do with Nausicaa at all. I can't believe people get fussy about this one "NOT HAVIN A PLOT!!!", way to miss the point and be such a slave to absolute structure.

| I love Totoro. It's got so much charm and its a wonderfully paced tale, nothing is forced and even the dub is pretty faithful. | |

I understand its point and how it's trying to be just a rather mellow, unique film, avoiding standard formulas and story structures and simply revolving around the lives of some kids(and it's not like it didn't have a plot as some complainers say, there was that story about their mother and such). I just don't see how it's...entertaining. At all. I mean I'm not some close-minded buffoon who was asking for some action or some big, major conflict to take place, I just wanted actually be emotionally invested in the film but I never was. I don't get what's so "magical" about these slice of life scenes. I never ended up caring about the children in the story much nor did I care about Totoro and all that other supernatural nonsense that hardly had anything to do with...anything. Yes, one can admit that it was a unique direction for an animated film and you can respect Miyazaki for making such an attempt, but all it seemed was basically a so-so film which some people enjoy simply because it relaxes them and isn't meant to challenge their minds. It's essentially the art house goon's equivalent of "popcorn flicks" like Transformers and all that obnoxious trash, except it doesn't try to kill you inside. But hey, I am a heartless monster. Maybe I just couldn't get into it because I hate kids, gigantic plush toys, and whimsical schmaltz.
