Devil

You know, that movie where the Devil kills people in an elevator? You might not think it looking at that premise, but it's such a fucking stupid movie.

Seriously, films like this are all about character. You can't do a horror film where most of it takes place in one enclosed spot with the group of people unless you can give each of them a very well defined and interesting personality. The salesman is the only character that was done that well and he was the first one to die. About 20 minutes in. The con-artist woman was okay too, but she needed more time to really make an impression. The old woman is a waste of space, and the other two are all over the place.

And that's another thing. You can't do a horror film like this properly if it's only 80 minutes long. Again, if most of the movie is going to be 5 people in an elevator, they need to be pretty damn engrossing characters. 80 minutes is not enough time to do that (although I doubt the writers and director could have done it anyway).

Also, the music is ridiculous.

I did like the intro with the upside down shots of the city though. Never really seen that in a film before, and it gives you a feel of unease right from the start. The titles are overlaid the right way up as well, so eventually it seems like you're seeing a whole city hanging from some giant ceiling. Apart from aforementioned ridiculous music, it's quite a subtle yet striking way to impose a sense of discomfort on the audience. Of course it's all wasted once the film get's going.

So yeah. Stupid movie.

Oh, and another thing. It seemed like the film was trying to be mysterious about who the killer was or whether it was supernatural. Which is fucking pointless when the film is called Devil and opens with a monologue about the Devil often doing exactly what happens in the movie.

One more thing. Pretty much the first line of dialogue the main character utters in the movie is "But every time I think about the guy who killed my family...". I nearly fell off my chair. Such clumsy writing.

Yep.

And yep, this movie was a pile of garbage. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the movie was halfway over before the supernatural shit started happening, wasn't it?

I figured out who the devil was after 18 minutes while only half paying attention. How long did it take you?

I must have missed something but I didn't think any of the people would be the devil. I figured they had all done something wrong and the devil was just fucking with them.

They state the movies, that the devil walks among them.

The idea of the film wasn't as bad as the film itself was. Its a relatively tense film. They even spell it out who would effectively be the last man standing when a loved one has to see the last death and the 'loved one' was really blatent. I was kinda bored so I just watched it. The thing is they tell you everything before it happens i.e. everyone will die, loved will see the last person die, its the devil, anyone who interferes will die. I mean I guess they could've been using that as a way to create more tension by making you feel like them all dying was inevitable, but I didn't really think they could make a film unless something could be done in the final scene.

The other thing is in films like this the devil isn't a malevolent force, its just something that punishes evil, its not something trying to corrupt. So in that sense you know its going to be reasoned with. It also just seems kinda dumb as only one guy had a shot at redemption, i'm probably overthinking it, but if the film was done better i'd have ignored the issues with the plot.

read this comment, saw trailer, saw movie just now. It was obvious in the trailer.
