I see no problem with the gameplay style RE4 established. I personally prefer it as a matter of fact. I enjoyed the old one too, but it was getting boring and repetitive. The huge decrease in sales seems to prove my point:

Resident Evil 2 - 4.96 million (2nd best selling RE)
Resident Evil 3 - 3.5 million
Resident Evil Code: Veronica - nearly 3 million
REmake - 1.35 million
RE0 - 1.25 million

RE4
GameCube: 1.6 million
PS2: over 2 million
Wii: 1.8 million
"As of January 2009, the title sold over 6 million copies total."

Also, RE5's PSN demo was downloaded over 1.5 times on the first day of release.

I might as well point that all of the previous REs (except 0 and REmake) had more than enough ammo to kill every single enemy and there were way many more herbs and first aid sprays available than there should ever be. It had though some scary moments.

Technically RE4 and 5 are survival horror (and not just because Capcom says so). You have to survive being attacked by hundreds of enemies much more lethal than the handful zombies of the other games.

That would be fine. If it weren't for the fact that, you know! RE4 and RE5 ARE NOT WHAT RESIDENT EVIL HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO BE!

They should've just started a new set of RE games once 4 came out. Just like Capcom started a new series of Megaman games once they changed the gameplay a bit.

Tyrant from RE is slow as hell and you only need 5 magnum bullets to kill him.

Resident Evil 2

The first time I was Leon and went into the room where you see the one way mirror but can't see the other side and go to walk passed it. I almost shat myself and literally was shaking for an hour or two.

That's the only time Resident Evil has scared me like that and it hasn't happened since.

Those unexpected appearances are what scare me the most. In RE0 it was the leech zombies and the Tyrant, in REmake the revived Crimson Heads and the Hunters breaking doors and windows, in RE2 the aforementioned licker and Mr.X, in RE3 the random appearances of Nemesis and in 4 the U3 and the maze's dogs.
