How can they send Wolvering back to the First Class group if events already happened differently before any time travel happened? Wouldn't that be like sending him to another dimension or something? don't think about it too much.. I mean, look at Terminator for example, John Connor is the son of a guy from the future that got sent back by a John Connor that already existed in that future...for some reason that doesn't really compute either I think. or maybe it does, time travel is just really a bitch to figure out sometimes so I wouldn't worry about it and just go with the flow. Yeah there's a shitload of paradoxes in terminator, they needed an arm from teh future to create that future. Reese would likely not have been born after they stop cyberdyne being a thing. There's more but i can't be assed to think about it. Despite 2 being good at the time its terrible now because that kid is annoying.

| I'm seeing it Tuesday night.
So, better than First Class? Better than Winter Soldier? Better than even The Avengers?

| The Avengers and Winter Soldier were better than this and I even enjoyed First Class more.
something just didn't click with me, it had it's great moments (in particular a slow-mo section which I'm not gonna spoil) but I often sat there yawning, cause it couldn't keep my attention in quite some sections.

So, better than First Class? Better than Winter Soldier? Better than even The Avengers? It did more things wrong than Avengers, but it's also much more ambitious. It toggles many plots, a billion characters, dozens of locations, but it never loses sight of the characters. James McAvoy gives a powerhouse performance as young Xavier, Fassbender is properly terrifying while also admirable, Jackman IS Wolverine without being the focus again and Quicksilver's prison break is a masterpiece of action filmmaking. I'd say it's better than First Class, because that one gets dragged down by some bizarre storytelling choices (Darwin's death) and a rotten Emma Frost. I'd say it's up there with Winter Soldier, but I think DoFP handled its themes better than TWS did. TWS also generally had better action sequences, but lacked the character work of DoFP. For what it's worth, it has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score amongst top critics (98%) since Superman II.

| Without spoiling it, is it even worth trying to figure out the continuity, or should I forget everything except First Class before seeing this? | |

| Forget the continuity. They don't bother explaining anything and you'll see why during the movie.
Also don't take any kids to the movie. The first minute has dozens of bodies getting piled up and it only gets more bleak and haunting from there. Though the '70s parts have very funny scenes.

| Well that was pretty good. Better than expected, if less stellar than I'd dared hope for. It certainly didn't hit the same lofty heights as Avengers or Winter Soldier, and I'm unsure if it's suffering a bit of Raimi Spider-Man syndrome (the first film being excellent, the second actually being better but still unable to match the sky-high expectations and leaving you feeling somehow disappointed) but it was an entertaining two hours with a keep-you-guessing plot, some really, really bold story devices and some great action pieces. Quicksilver was awesome, and I hope his Age of Ultron counterpart is given the same kind of treatment. Also, Fassbender's Magneto is an utter jackass. | |

| Okay, so apparently First Class, X1-3, and possibly Origins/The Wolverine are all the same continuity, which makes absolutely no sense, but it doesn't matter because - Spoiler:
It's all erased with time travel shenanigans anyway. Really though, how the fuck does that all fit together?
Also, if the next movie is going to done with the First Class lot, there's not going to be much tension is there? We know that practically everyone is alive in the new future. Mystique could die I suppose.

Well continuity wise, First Class would obviously still happen, and so would parts of Origins but the original trilogy, the second half of Origins and the entirety of The Wolverine has basically been scrubbed out. Pretty handy way of rebooting the franchise and still keeping the continuity intact.

It's a nice way of throwing away the scrambled mess of the old continuity, sure. It was just weird to see it confirmed that it was all a single continuity, because it really doesn't make sense. Hearing Xavier talk about how Mystique was like his sister, knowing it was the Xavier from X1-3, was extremely odd.
Also the fact that Mystique was apparently captured and experimented on decades before X1, but nothing came of it until sometime after X3 when suddenly Sentinels appeared. And she escaped was completely fine after the experiments too, despite all the other mutants dying.
I watched X2 the other day as well, and Magneto says he helped Charles build Cerebro, which is bollocks. And Striker looks so much younger in DoFP than he does in Origins. Although I thought he look far too old in Origins anyway, considering how he looked in X2.
The whole thing is fucked.
Still, doesn't matter now. Good film.

Have you rewatched Avengers anytime recently? It doesn't hold up as well once you get used to the whole shared universe thing. The plot is extremely flimsy and it lacks character moments (besides Iron Man and Hulk), because those were all done in the individual movies.

| I considered all of that Bryan Singer saying fuck you to everyone. I don't like you or your terrible characters. They seemed to have taken every character that sucks out of continuity.
On a more interesting note with this film being made in association with marvel studios the implications given the events in winter soldier are intersting.

| It's not made in association with Marvel Studios. In fact, Marvel has ignored the existence of this movie throughout. | |
