Kishi did it because they were too strong for their arcs. There was no one before Kakashi left the village to get Naruto that could have legitimately defeated Kimimaro. And Itachi was stronger than any leaf ninja so they had to give him a disease as well. The sad thing is that they were some of the better characters in the manga.

So Madara will die from a disease as well?

Itachi was not interesting and no Madara is not strong at all, so he will be killed by either Sasuke or Naruto.

Pre-death, you're right. Once his story was told by Madara, I found him more of a interesting character in comparison. Yeah, Madara will lose to Naruto the same way the Fourth Hokage beat him and then either Sasuke or Kabuto will kill him.

If anything he got worse after Madara.

Well at least Sasuke did. He just keeps getting worse as the series progresses.

No shit, Kishimoto didn't even want Sasuke to begin with, his editors had him make Sasuke so Naruto could have a rival character. Look at all of the storylines from Part 1, look at how all of them would not change had Sasuke not been made with the exception of the obvious one. Now Kishimoto's pretty much fallen in love with Sasuke and has centered the story around him,

Sasuke is a printer of money for him.

He's the second most popular character in Japan behind Naruto, which says a lot about Japan's Naruto fans. Everyone in America hates Sasuke if they are male or rationally thinking women.

I'm pretty sure Sasuke is probably the most popular Naruto character in the west, much like Vegeta is the most popular DBZ character. It doesn't matter how they're written, anti-hero rival character = instant fanbase.
