The Bourne Trilogy

Got these films on bluray for Christmas. I had already seen the first two, but the third one was new to me. Fantastic action films, all three of them.

I think the third one, The Bourne Ultimatum, is my favourite of the trilogy. At first it felt a bit unsatisfactory though. Being the third in a trilogy, you expect some closure, and while the film delivers that, it's not particularly good closure. Bourne finds out what happened to him and who he was, but that knowledge isn't exactly a relief for him or the audience because it turns out he wasn't exactly unwilling in the whole process.

In the end, I actually appreciate the film a bit more for having that kind of conclusion. There were a couple things like that in Ultimatum. Like the Nikki character. She was part of Treadstone in The Bourne Identity, and was brought back for Supremacy film in a way that made sense, but in Ultimatum it's just a coincidence that they bump into each other. Plus she decides to help Bourne all of a sudden. I could smell a forced romance coming on, but surprisingly it never happened. There's a single line and a small scene to set up that there's something between them, but I the relationship doesn't even get so far as shaking hands. It becomes a small, almost irrelevant detail, and it's better for it.

Ultimatum also has my favourite action moment from all three films. During the rooftop chase, where Bourne leaps from a balcony through a window, and the camera leaps with him and follows him through it.



I was stunned when I saw that. It was like bullet time all over again or something.

This explains why I quit 15 minutes into the film, after having enjoyed the first two installments.

I've only actually seen the first one. I really should get around to renting/downloading them or something.

I didn't mean during the first part of the film, I meant after having watched it.

And barely anything has happened after 15 minutes. Why did you stop?

I must've gotten further in the movie than I thought, since I can remember the Waterloo scene and Nicky's involvement with Bourne. I can't remember why I stopped though... which probably means there wasn't a very good reason for it.

Great films supremacy is by far the weakest.

I bought all three of HD DVD years ago. They're all really great films, and almost certainly the inspiration behind the James Bond reboot in Casino Royale.

I think my mom has the second movie. I've already seen the first (though I don't mind seeing it again), so maybe I should give that a try.

Supremacy comes off as the weakest because it's it in the middle I think. Although it's good to show that Bourne wants to remember the things he's done so he can try to atone for them. It leads straight into the third film as well. It was a really cool touch to take the final scene of Supremacy and have it take place towards the end of Ultimatum.
