here's what i call my elven thief because i'm unimaginative like that

Race: Wood Elf
Gender: Male
Birth Sign: Thief
Specialisation: Stealth
Favoured attributes: Speed and Agility
Major Skills: Sneak, Acrobatics, Marksman, Alchemy, Light Armour, Restoration, Alteration

I need to double check those major skills but i think thats what i have.

Mine is usually something like...

Race: Breton
Birthsign: Mage
Specialisation: Magic
Favoured attributes: Intelligence & Willpower
Major Skills: Everything having to do with magic and stuff (I just pick the Mage class)

A second one for when I'm feeling like going Conan on everyone's ass...

Race: Redguard
Birthsign: Warrior
Specialisation: Combat
Favoured attributes: Strength & Endurance
Major Skills: Blade, Blunt, Block, Marksman, Alchemy, Armorer, Light Armor/Heavy Armor (Which ever I'm in the mood for.)

With the Redguard, I go into Skin and lighten the color...Mostly because I like being the one white Redguard in the game. Makes me stand out.

if you ever make a new character buu don't ever put athletics as a major skill. i regret doing that for my first character

it isn't how often you use it, it is the fact that you can't fully control its level increase and that in the higher levels it takes forever to raise. i have over 100 hours on my data that has it as a major skill and i believe athletics is only around the high sixties

I tend to go for Breton Mage characters.

My first unfortunately had too many physical attributes and has stagnated at about Lv 23. I put more Magic in the second one and that has reached Lv 33. I did put Athletics in though so the remaining levels will take a while. Sneak is not so bad as I tend to sneak most of the time and it does seem to level reasonably fast when enemies are around. Some of the Mage attributes level remarkably fast (for quick levelling). With the Wizards Lair spellmaker some 1 point spells make levelling some of the mage attributes relatively painless.

Mercantile is one to avoid like the plague (i studiously ignored it!). On my second character I resorted to selling arrows individually to level it (700+ arrows takes a while to sell!). I did use a spell to boost it so that I could buy into a few shops to boost my income. Strangely spell boosting is OK for that. It was a huge relief to finally hit 50 on Mercantile as I could sell anywhere and so make use of the best prices.

Part of me feels obliged to actually make some decent builds and post them here as google seems to keep sending people to this thread.

Yeah, it's page one on a google search. I'll dig out some of my Oblivion builds, though at this stage of the game's life I doubt we'll get too much traffic through on account of this search alone.
