I think it's because hardly anyone is actually an active fane of the Simpsons. Nowadays it's just a show that's sort of there in the background. Mention it, and they'll say "Yeah, it's good". But ask them what they're favourite show is most won't think of it, ar at least it won't be the first thing they think of. In my experience.
