The Fall

Very good film, saw it today. First english language film I've seen at the cineman for a few weeks.

It's set in an LA hospital/chapel just at the time when silent movies are being made. A little girl at the hospital befriends a film stuntman who broke his back, and he tells her an epic story. And the story all plays out on screen in some amazing locations, with amazing cinematography, and it just looks amazing basically. Here, let me get the trailer...

Anyway, so yeah, it's amazing. Eventually the man, Roy, asks the girl to steal medicine for him if she wants to hear the rest of the story, and from their it slowly takes a downward spiral (not the films quality, the arc of the story). There were moments, well one sequence in particular, where the films visuals just went too far into the strange and it became a little too unreal. But that was followed by the last part of the film, which was the best part, so it's forgiveable. It's well acted, and edited (normally I wouldn't really think about editing but the way the imaginary parts and real parts of the film overlap make it obvious. In a good way), and directed, and, well everything was great. I recommend it.

And, I'll say it, by the end I'd shed one or two tears.

It's out on DVD now (bought it today), so you all go buy it and watch it.

yeah that changes things a lot

my dvd collection is not looking as expansive these days as i seriously cut down on what i'm buying mind i need to debate if i get dvd or blu ray for every movie now

I have yet to buy a film on blu-ray. It doesn't look like DVD is going anywhere soon. It's certainly isn't going to vanish as fast as VHS did.

thats true upscaling is a perfectly good feature
