Just from those examples the western stuff is obviously more sexualised, there's a difference between showing some skin and blatant sexual imagery.

Knowing almost nothing about Japanese sexuality beyond what I see in videogames and jokes on the internet, my professional opinion is when the Japanese sexualise something, it's more complicated than just sticking a woman in a thong and having her shake her arse around.
In that sense I guess it's less sexualised. The whole "idol" thing seem like it's based around creating the ideal fantasy wife, who's perfect in every way rather than simply having a great body, which is as far as western music gets. And it doesn't even get that far sometimes.
Since you offered to do the research, does Japan have any fat female pop stars?

koda kumi is one of the j-pop stars that started the trend that fuses japanese "kawaii" culture and western sexualization

Japanese idols almost always star in bikini photo books and stuff, but they're almost never sexually aggressive, like western pop stars often are.

This. However, at the same time, you tend to see a lot of sexualization in other forms of Japanese media, particularly animation. And in ways that music doesn't show it.
