This is a pretty good reason, assuming vanguard hasn't changed all that much.

So has anyone tried this/is it any good? I'd try it out myself but EA clearly doesn't like money anymore as it requires Origin. Never thought I'd have to wait for someone to crack a demo.

I tried the demo as Vanguard, got my arse handed to me. The lengthier skill trees are very welcome, but they do obviously mean it takes longer to reach some of the more essential abilities, and the cooldown on Charge is insanely long now - as far as I can tell, it's around 16 seconds at best. Hopefully other abilities will help bring that down a little, otherwise vanguard got the mother of all nerfings.
Graphically not much has changed since ME2 - slightly better textures and lighting effects, but nothing like the leap from ME1 to ME2, and there's still a very obvious difference in the attention given to facial modelling/texturing of important characters and Joe Public NPC.
Some familiar faces too...
Spoiler:
Ashley / Kaiden, Liara, Wrex, Garrus and Mordin all make appearances. Wrex is still awesome.
Gameplay again seems very similar to ME2, but that's no bad thing. It's been a while since I played that, so I was a touch rusty, hence numerous deaths but for the most part I think I'll settle back into the groove just fine.

It's because of the new capacity system and the fact the demo forces you to carry four guns. The less you carry = the faster your powers recharge.
In the maingame, as a Vanguard, you should only ever be carrying a shotgun and the Carnifex.

Sure, but do we really need an Origin account? Yesterday when I played the demo, it went on about that nonsense or something, but I was like "fuck that" and just canceled the pop-up and just played the two single-player missions.

This is the main reason why I'm not ever going to buy the game.

The only people who need origins are the pc fags. Console peeps just have to agree to some TOS style bs
it takes like five seconds

And that makes it okay for EA to implement absurdly restrictive DRM that, unlike Steam, doesn't offer any benefits whatsoever to the consumer?

Well after playing the demo through twice (as adept and then as vanguard), I am both satisfied and disappointed at parts. The combat is solid and enjoyable, and I only imagine it will get better once I've had a chance to play around a bit more with the powers and stats. As well as what you say about the number of weapons you carry.
However while the dialogue has been very good at times, like Wrex's discourse right at the start of the second mission - I enjoyed the banter between Garrus and Wrex, although it was simple it was entertaining - it's very disappointing when you play through twice, picking different dialogue options, only to find out that they aren't really very different at all. I expected them to be like the previous games, and truly be renegade and paragon, having different effects on the people at the time and possibly down the line. In the first mission this isn't the case, it's basically "well this is the way we want it to happen, and so fuck you". The second mission doesn't have that as much, though it still doesn't seem like you can make a very different game out of choosing to be renegade or paragon; does that hold true for the full game, Sarbud?
Also I did sort of 'double charge', where Shep charged at someone (I was mashing because I was about to die and it was the last enemy) and as soon as the guy recoiled from the impact he charged again straight away. So I know the cooldown isn't that short, do you know if it was a glitch, a chance based thing, or some kind of finishing move when you charge the last target?

I did an adept run today, and the huge cooldown on your biotics really does kinda ruin the demo. Surely it would have been a better decision to give Soldier all the guns, and let everyone else try and make do with their own specialities? Don't get me wrong, Adept still felt pretty powerful, but you spend half the time waiting for Singularity to finish it's agonisingly long cool down - it's the kind of thing that might put off someone new to the series who didn't understand the mechanic.
@Skip As for Vanguard, one of the final levelling options is a chance that you have no cooldown. If you've levelled it all the way, that's what must have happened.

Is the demo worth trying out if you've never played a Mass Effect before?

Yes, but it's not a hold-your-hand kind of a demo. It gives you basic instructions, but I'd imagine you'd struggle with some aspects having not played ME1 or especially ME2.

It's just that the intro has to end a certain way, you know? In the main game, I think there's just as much 'branch' available through dialogue choices as in ME2.
