I'm more put off by the fact the girls the lead and the gang doesn't seem to have any decnt guys in it.

It being a Final Fantasy game has nothing to with why most people don't like it.

There are things wrong with it but the reason it gets the degree of hate it does is because its a FF game and if it isn't NES-PS(though some of the more extreme hipsters stop at VI) people think it's cool to hate it.

And if you really want to anyone can be the lead. It doesn't have to be a girl.

Its not hard to see why 6 would be considered the best.

That said all FF games up to 9 are great. 10 is definitely decent enough, but it felt like the start of a decline.

I really like 12. I wasn't a fan of the fact that the story took a back seat. I'm personally a fan of cutscenes and stuff like that when it comes to jrpgs. But the gambit system was fun and the loot system made just running around and battling fun too.

Wasn't 12 a MMO?

I don't hate the latest games because it's cool nor do I believe that all the old installments were outstanding either(hell, I already said how much I detested VIII's horrible writing).

Truth be told, the only ones I still genuinely like are FFVII(and it should have stayed as one game instead of having its universe butchered by trash like Advent Children and such) and FFIX.

FFVI's decent too, but I wish the Kefka fanboys would just shut up about how amazing he is. His constant glorification is just to overcompensate for the lack of attention he recieved after everyone else started jerking off to Sephiroth. They're both average villains at the end of the day.

The reason why people like Kefka is because he actually accomplished things as opposed to the whole "I'll get you next time, hero!" thing.

True, but he still isn't that great of a character himself. He's just another uninteresting and insane twat with bizarre attire.

Kuja was pretty decent, but still left something to be desired. He had the potential to be a real great character, but they never bothered showing his development. Instead Square just opted to have someone explain his lifestory to you late in the game all at once. However, considering he's a "behind-the-scenes" kind of guy, that direction's pretty much a given I guess. There's also the fact that they gave him such a fruity design...

I never really got the Kefka love either. He's a good enough villian. Bat shit crazy and then becomes god-like but Kuja and Sephiroth remain my favorite to this day.

DA:O is pretty cheap now, but it's very old school in some areas of its game mechanics and is lacking polish. A great game, but it takes a while to see it. ME2 is a different beast. It's polished to within an inch of it's life, the shooting / cover mechanic feels perfectly honed, yet it feels more like a shooter with RPG elements than an out and out RPG; (the RPG elements are all there, there's just no flab, everything is very lean). Not that that should stop you buying it, it's one of the best games this gen regardless of genre, but if you're craving a JRPG or something more traditional, then ME2 may not satisfy.
