Did they ever explain how an object can eat a Devil's Fruit?

Like really, a sword that swallowed the fruit, turns into an elephant? A gun swallows the fruit, is a dog? Makes no sense.

well, if the fruit got lodged into teh barrel, i could see it being counted as eating... i guess. but the sword thing does seems a little wierd to me--even by OP standards.

Well if the handle of the sword has a little crack in it then the fruit could get stuck in it, or between the handle in the blade.

It hasn't been explained... yet. I imagine that Dr. Vegapunk (or whatever the Devil Fruit researcher's name is) developed some kind of device that somehow bonds Devil Fruits with non-living objects.
