| Instead of paying for them? Good times.
I just realised that some of the new chars in sfxt will be on disc. Mvc was the same way. Could have been a reward for doing something hard like getting a high score or beating it on very hard or not taking a hit etc. I for one enjoy unlocking people in fighting games. Even games with shop modes and buying new characters with in game points was fun. It felt like you were expanding the cast yourself and I miss that. Whatever this is sorta a rant/v ent. I just don't like the way things are going.

It takes a long fucking time to make DLC in downloadable form and a lot of memory to do so, it makes sense for them to be on the disc. What I dread is DLC for a video game in general when it's close to the release date, I don't care if it's on the disc so long as there's no Day One bullshit. - Quote :

This has always been tedious. I hate when the game doesn't give me the fucking cast right away and I have to piss about in arcade mode and so on just to play as the characters I want to play as. It annoyed the hell out of me that I had to play as 8 or so characters before I could get Sakura in SFIV, let alone Gouken and Akuma who you had to go through stupid requirements to fight and then their annoying super forms would be assholes to take down. Points in games like MvC2 for everything were even worse. It was tedious as hell playing through the damn arcade mode 500 million times just to unlock everything, even games like CvS couldn't do that shit properly. Only MvC3 did it at a decent rate and it happens so quickly, you wonder why they even bothered to make them unlockable in the first place.

| Oh gosh, MvC2. Now that was something else entirely. Thank goodness MvC3 and the PSN version of MvC2 were nothing like that. | |

If content is finished before the discs are printed it should be free with a new purchase and open for everyone from the get go. I cannot believe you'd be okay with developers deliberately removing content from the finished game with the intention to monetise it. If content it made after the discs have been printed that's obviously a different story but the shit you're talking about is absurdly anti-consumer.

| That's basically it, paying for characters that are on disc. If said characters are so special that you can't use them right away, they should be unlockable. Plus trying to unlock characters if done right can add to game length and maybe a sense of accomplishment. Like a oh wow I can use him now, feeling.
And yeah paying for something you should have access to in the first place is bs. Its like they turned one area of fighting games I've always enjoyed and turned it into a cash grabber.

| Mass Effect 3 is currently causing Bioware a bit of grief, because that will have day one DLC. While I agree that releasing any paid DLC on day one does rather take the piss, it won't affect me at all - I've pre ordered the N7 edition, which means I get said day one DLC for free anyway. | |

| Even though I happily shelled out cash for extra characters on all the games I loved (FoTNS: Ken's Rage (And the alt. costumes for the regular cast.), Hard Corps: Uprising, & Castlevania HD), I agree that they should've at least been already in-game and unlockable.
Really, The only games I've seen that's treated the extra content like a boss were Way of The Samurai 3 & Elevator Action Deluxe (The former having free "create a charater" parts and build your own weapons and such, The latter having an extra level and four characters so far, Also free.)

Most games have finished development long before they've actually been released. Most DLC is created in that period when the game has finished but hasn't yet been released. There have been very few egregious cases of "We cut this content out" and all of them have been called out on their bullshit. There's also the fact that the used game market is picking up more in this day and age and due to that, it's not really helping out the companies that need this money to help fund more games and themselves, so even if it comes down to on-disc DLC, it's something of a necessary evil no matter how pissy you get about not getting content that was added to the game as an afterthought.

If companies want to fight used sales and such makes more sense to be rewarded for buying new not punished. This DLC fad makes people think it makes more sense to wait for a Complete edition to be released down the line.

| If the DLC is already on the disc it was obviously finished before the game was printed and should under no circumstances be sold separately. | |

Either way, DLC had the potential to pave the way for a new way of keeping games alive past their normal lifespans and sort of ended up just becoming another way for companies to try and shill some more.

I quite like the idea of preorder DLC. The problem is having multiple exclusive Preorder DLC, meaning you would need to buy multiple copies to get it all.

| Yeah, that's the sort of thing that made pre-ordering Arkham City really fucking annoying. | |

| pre-order DLC usually becomes available to everyone anyways... although it does usually come at a price then though...
I don't usually get DLC though as most of the times it's not really worth it, or doesn't interest me. I'm probably getting everything for FFXIII-2 though, loved the game + story, and it's nice they're gonna release extra episodes for other characters like Sazh, and monster DLC that you can battle and add to your party. I love having Omega Weapon in my party, and I'm gonna get Lightning and Amodar too..

Oh God, I remember this. Beating Seth with every character even on very easy was a nightmare. Yes, I'm unbelievably bad at 2d fighting games.

| If it's for example a fighting game you probably won't care that much about the story. You just want to beat someone up. In the DBZ Tenkaichi games you needed to complete some totally arbitrary fights with special conditions to unlock characters, but the game didn't tell you which. I bet most people don't really want to beat Seth in SFIV just to play as Juri or whoever. | |

| Its a fighting game. The work comes from learning how to use a character, not from unlocking them.

| It's a fucking fighting game, I want to be able to play the characters I wish to learn already, not have the game force me to play characters I don't like playing as before I'm rewarded with the character I actually want to play as. It's one thing when it's something like an adventure or party game, it's another when its a competitive game like a fighting game that the genuine challenge and time consuming nature comes in learning a character and not in getting the character. I would like to spend more of my time learning that character and not pissing around with a bunch of other assholes I won't play ever again. | |

| I think MvC3 did it best. They do make you unlock characters, but only 4 and it's not tedious at all to get them. Just getting used to the game in Arcade mode basically unlocks them all. | |
