Well, it's good in that it can take hits well. Not too sure about how strong it is though. Once it gets Shadow ball it should be good though. Torchik and Treecko are starters btw.

slaking is a tank but only attacks once every two turns.....

if you don't want that i'll be an aron, seedot, makuhita, zangoose or a bagon.

R/S/E has some of my favorite pokemon

EDIT: if you don't choose torchic, slakoth and seedot can be caught before the first gym i think. makuhita and aron right before the second gym

whatever you want to use to keep your team balanced i'm fine with any of those

Treecko is the best starter. You should evolve it before level 26 though.

Well, its second and third forms learn different attacks than the first form. One of those attacks is the best grass attack in the game (weaker than solar beam, but no chargge up time.) As for being the best, I guess it's down to opinion, but Swampert has a double weakness, and Blaziken has tons of weaknesses.
