Katekyo Hitman Reborn
It's about a wimpy highschooler who gets tutored by a hitman baby to become a mafia boss. No joke.

*shrug* Well, I used to feel that KHB was good, but the current story arc is pretty unlikable (in my opinion). It's like the series went: funny-funny-funny-SERIOUS-funny-funny-funny-SERIOUS-SERIOUS-funny-funny-DRAMADRAMADRAMADRAMADRAMADRAMADRAMA!
As for D.Grey-man (or however it is spelt), I have no idea. I haven't checked that series out.
Anyhow, check out Nagaserete Airantou! Now THAT is a good series, if a little short!

It's about a thirteen-year-old boy who washes up on an uncharted island; the inhabitants are roughly 100 years behind in technology/culture... and are all female. As you might expect, highjinks ensue.
The series does have an ending, albeit one of those "And life goes on" kind of endings that don't completely conclude the story.

Yeah, it's an ecchi anime.
A lot of the episodes do feel pretty stand-alone for the most part, although they generally tie together with the boy's efforts to adapt to island life, all the while supporting his new friends; there is an undercurrent of "trying to return home", although it is more prominant during the earliest and last episodes.
