In early Pokemon episodes, the eating of Pokemon is implied several times. When Ash catches a Krabby, it disappears to Oak's PC because it's his seventh Pokemon; Ash immediately frets that Oak might consider it food and eat it.

In a later episode, Ash's party and Team Rocket are trapped on a raft in the middle of the ocean; lacking any food, they decide to eat Jame's recently purchased and completely useless Magikarp. In self-defence, the Pokemon evolves into a Gyarados and unleashes it's violent vengence (I forget how exactly events play out after that).

It was confirmed by the series very early on that the main reason Farfetch'd are so rare is because they were overhunted due to how tasty they're supposed to be.
