Well they have no choice. Although the graphics are practically almost at ps2's league in the gameplay scenes of them running around and battling, I doubt it'd be best to make them their height of DQ8 guys or something. Hell, even DQ8's characters were semi-chibi, the Hero is 20 yet he looks 15. >_>

Even though that intro clip is obviously just a video for the intro(something the GBA did even before DS with KH COM), the in-game cutscenes after all that still look awesome and near-ps2 graphics like. Here's hoping the game's length will be godly. If this game will be like that, then this will be the ultimate handheld RPG for a long time.
