I want to play this again now. You talked over Rule of Nature though.

Oh I record the commentary while i'm playing. Haven't played it before so weren't really thinking about that. I'm just trying to avoid talking over the in game characters talking.
EDIT: I'll be better at this later, I think i wasn't used to the fact I was just talking to no one at the time of recording.

I've never watched a video let's play do I don't have anything to compare this to but you're not Pewdiepie so it's probably decent.
Make sure you learn how to manually cut with the right stuck in blade mode now, you'll need it for some bosses later and it can make the rest of the game easier through zandatsu as well.

Thanks, i'm hoping mission 2 has larger fighting sections so I can actually get used to the game mechanics. I did work out how to initiate the blade mode from parry though I will not be able to pull that off consistently for a good while.
I'll definitely consider all that when i start mission 2. I recorded the whole of mission 1 in 1 go so i won't be able to change my playstyle till mission 2.

R-01 starts explaining stuff a lot more. You start on a beach with no enemies so you can mess around a bit with blade mode.

I don't normally watch playthroughs with commentary because yours is pretty good. I don't want sound like BD, but your voice is great. If I had to guess your age, I'd say you're between 18-22 years old.

Thanks guys, I've put the second part up now and updated the first post.
I will try and be a lot better in tomorrows video. I have a awful moment around 4 minutes where I weren't sure if it was automated or not, I hate parts like that in games, lol.

I hope you purchase Defensive Offensive as soon as possible. It's your dodge move and it's vital.

It's not that vital. I found simple jumping was just as good for avoiding unblockable attacks. Doesn't look as cool though.

Yeah I don't think the dodge is that huge, it's definitely good but nearly everything in the game can be parried or cut before it hits you and ninja run is pretty good for gtfo-ing anyway.

Also I think you figured it out in the most recent video but just to clarify you trigger zandatsu by cutting through the red box without destroying the rest of an enemies body in blade mode. Try to parry every attack that has a red flash and follow up aggressively, iirc the parry can be used mid combo and isn't intended to be used to 'turtle'.

Buu, don't listen to these scrubs. Buy Defensive Offense; it's the cheapest unlock in the game for a reason. It gives you invincibility frames, it lets you avoid getting owned by unblockable attacks (indicated by yellow flashes), it gives you access to the Dodge Offset mechanic, and it lets you dodge into attacks and deal damage to an enemy.

Thanks Psycho, I gotta say doing commentary was considerably harder then I thought. It felt weird basically talking to myself.

That sounds awesome, I purchased it as by end of mission 2 i had loads of battlepoints (i just bought all the basic moves I could). Also thanks for clarifying what attacks were blockable and unblockable as you'll see in the next video which i'll put up tomorrow. I had no clue what I was doing when fighting the boss midway through this chapter. I just got my ass kicked luckily you seem to use healing items automatically in this so I ended up living. I did much better against the mission 2 final boss though.
I do have two questions though:
Am I supposed to just go into blade mode when japanese writing appears on the right side of the screen? If an attack arcs so it swings in from the side do i parry left/right instead or forward?

Of course buy it. Buy everything. It's just not vital.
Generally just go into Blade Mode when indicated, usually by the game going to slow motion. Whenever a part of an enemy turns blue, that means it can be cut with Blade Mode, so do that whenever you want. Using Blade Mode to attack stuff is a bad idea though, only do it to cut a part off or as a finisher.
Pretty sure you parry towards the enemy regardless of the attack. Not entirely sure because those bipedal robots would still get me with thos big kicks sometimes.

Basically, if you see "blue" it means activate blade mode (L1) because you can cut something. When you cut an enemies core and tear out their spine, that's called a "zandatsu".
If a part of an enemy turns blue, that means that that part can now be cut apart in blade mode. With regular enemies you can shred them instantly, but with bigger enemies or upgraded enemies (like Gekkos or the armored enemies with the longswords) you need to deal enough damage to them first before they can be cut to pieces.
If the game slows down and you get a blue edge around the screen, that means you've dealt enough damage to the enemy to now cut part of their body. If you enter blade mode at this point, you can cut off whatever part of them turned blue. You can manually trigger this with some attacks (the easiest one to do is to slide into enemies, which instantly sets weaker enemies up for a zandatsu).
If the game slows down and you get a blue edge around the screen and you see a kanji character, it's your prompt to activate blade mode and instantly kill the enemy (or deal a lot of damage, if it occurs during a boss fight). Occasionally, if you stun an enemy you can perform an execution move by pressing triangle and circle. Raiden will perform a combo to destroy the enemy, and you'll be prompted at a certain point by the kanji character to press L1 so you can zandatsu them.
Also, whenever the screen turns blue and you get the slowdown, if you press L1 your blade mode meter will automatically be refilled to blue so you don't have to worry about missing out.

Just super duper useful and makes most things less troublesome.

Thanks a lot for this, that clears up all my blade mode questions.
Do you happen to know about the parry direction for sweeping attacks or are they just very hard to time?

You have to parry towards the enemy making the attack, not the incoming limb/tail/tentacle/nipple/etc. I believe.
If you are still unable to parry those attacks that are giving you trouble, it may be because they're unblockable(the on-screen flash would be orange/yellow instead of red if this was the case). In which case, dodge.

Also that triangle+circle finisher move happens when the enemy is stunned. I think a perfect parry stuns basic enemies so you can kill them quickly. There's an unlockable sword called the Stun Blade which stuns enemies easily, good fun.

I never bothered with the other weapons much, and I was never bothered about getting S ranks either, so I'm no sure if the rank syste punishes you for using the bonus weapons. The polearm seemed like the least useful of the boss weapons though.

In case you haven't figured it out, lock-on is R2.
