How is it compared to the likes of Toukiden and Soul Sacrifice? Oddly, I can't seem to find a physical copy anywhere (it was allegedly released in EU at the end of april, but no-one seems to have stock which is a little puzzling) and it's only £23.99 digital. I'd rather have a physical copy as it can be sold afterwards, but if the game has anything like the legs of Toukiden and is impossible to get hold of a disc I'll get it digital.

i haven't played either of those so i can't compare them. i've seen people say this is similar to monster hunter, though.
the combat system is fairly simplistic. there is a light attack and heavy attack. you can combo up to five button press starting with light attack. dependant on what you press, you'll do a different combo. starting with heavy attack will either do a knock back attack or launcher that can be followed by air combos. there are ace skills you can use that use AP and requires a cool down before use again. i assume the ace skills are unlocked by story progression, i only have one at the moment. you can equip up to three consumables and use them during a quest. there's a super mode you get fairly early that increases your power and gives you hp absorption at the cost of steady hp depletion for a limited time. there's a step action to dodge or close space between you and an enemy. some actions require AP so you can't constantly spam them either, but AP regenerates very quickly as long as you aren't fighting.
character customization has about 20-25 options for hair, face, and voice. you get a color slider for hair color, about 7 different skin colors, and 6 different fighting styles.
stats are determined by story progression, weapons, and cards equipped to your outfit. you get cards by killing monsters and buying them or trading them at the shop or through acquiring outfits. the amount of cards you can equip are determined by your outfit limit bar and the cards cost. i think the maximum amount of cards you can equip is 8. weapons and outfits can be upgraded if you have the money and materials. outfits may also be dyed 1of 4 different colors.
a lot of quests that i've played reuse the same areas. of the 15 or so i've played, i've only seen 3 different areas. the controls can be a bit strange to. blocking in the ps3 version is sprint + light attack. if you have any more questions i'll try to answer them. i'm not far, though

The main difference between Ragnarok and Toukiden is aerial combat. There's a jump button, a dash/air dash, and every weapon has a launch move I think. The bosses can also be a lot bigger, and for those battles you can do multiple jumps to boost yourself way up high to attack them.
Stats are also mostly determined by cards, rather than equipment. You can wear anything you want and still have good stats as long as you equip the right cards.

If I seem a little hesitant, it is because reviews have been very mixed, and despite enjoying Toukiden I didn't really get on with Soul Sacrifice. How do they compare in general terms? I know you've lost a lot of hours to Toukiden - did Ragnarok grab you in the same way, was there anything it does better than Toukiden or is there just a little something missing?

I think I played Ragnarok for about 60 hours. I liked it at the time but it can be annoying. It's harder than Toukiden with harsher drop rates. The crafting system is either more complicated or more awkward, I can't really remember. I never got into it in the same way as Toukiden. I haven't played it in ages, but buu and I played together when it was new. He played it again recently and said it was much worse than he remembered after playing Toukiden.
Mixed reviews aren't surprising. Most fans of the genre didn't like Ragnarok Odyssey. I didn't know why at the time but now I can sort of see it. I don't plan on getting it unless there's a good sale.

Ah, perhaps one to avoid then - I'm not looking for something that feels like a backwards step from Toukiden, though I assume it was the original version you played, not Ace?

Yeah, I'm not familiar with what's new in Ace.

I took the plunge and bought this digitally, but I think I should have listened to you, Nonny. I'm struggling to get into it. There's very little weight to the combat, everything feels very "floaty" and you can't chop-and-change your class a la Toukiden's weapon swaps. Given that combat is such a major part of the game, this is likely to be an issue.
I'm persevering for now, hoping that it's simply a matter of getting accustomed to it instead of trying to play it like Toukiden.

After playing Toukiden Ragnorok seemed a bit shitty TBH. Although I did enjoy the dual swords class a lot. The equipment finding is way more effort then I can be bothered to put in a game and I still LMAO at the wall me and moose hit. I overcame it by letting a random person one shot bosses that I could barely scratch and in one case could barely stand near without dying.

Yeah, Toukiden has a better "feel" to it. That seems vague, I know, but it's the only way to describe it. For it's faults, Toukiden was very responsive, RO:A just feels quite woolly in comparison. I found my first boss monster yesterday, but the game was quite insistent that I wasn't yet ready to take it on. I disagreed, hitting with my most damaging spell, which did an ego-damaging 1 damage. Yes, that's not a typo, it did one point of damage. Suffice to say, I ran away rather quickly, finishing the mission by collecting x amount of y.

Y-Yeah The dialogue is utter crap so I have no idea what the story is, heck it probably doesn't have one. Nevertheless Im still chuffing my way till the plat, as Im just using this game as practice for the upcoming God eater(s). Though Im surprised there are still people on this game....
Also if anyone is wondering Im having a bad time with this, This Wins the top prize of being the worst monster Hunting out off all the released games (on sony based platforms so far).

Well I got this now, and i tried loading it up but the walls of text quickly put me off I will try to play this game at some point though. This time i need to work out how to play the classes. I thought coming back to this after I played a few monster hunting games would make me more pro. Let's see if that works.

Shockingly this game ges a helluva lot better in the later chapters. Once you get a decent build and the addition of ACE skills in this version make it a lot of fun.
If you anyone is playing the EU version of this or wants to get into i let me know I'll see if I can help out.

I've got too many really good games I've yet to play to want to put any time into a mediocre one under the premise that it gets better.

Really depends if you were anywhere in it the first decent fight is in chapter 3, and then from chapter 6 onwards the game jus gets better and better. Time wise its not long in. Its not too hard to get to grips with the games system either I apparently just couldn't be assed initially. I'll upload some of the later boss fights footage later so you can see what I'm talking about.
EDIT: actually on top of that I could probably get you to the point it gets better in less than an hour. I'm playing regularly at the moment, but I am playing coop. Assuming you ever want to play this I'm guessing this will be your only chance to actually play coop as the servers are dead, except over powered people.
I mainly bumped this because its one of the only games that has a good dragon fight.
