It's pretty good, the combat is surprisingly deep and challenging for a JRPG though it takes a little while to learn and if you don't know what you're doing it can be really frustrating. It also takes a while for it to really hit its stride as at the beginning your characters are far too weak to do much of anything but midgame it gets really cool. All that said it's really satisfying and once you've got the basics down it's one of the better semi turn based battle systems I've used. Certainly much better than FFXIII which came out at the same time and completely overshadowed this.
Story is virtually non existent and I had no idea what the fuck was supposed to be happening most of the time so if you're wanting that I'd stay away.
Customisation is a pretty big part and there are shitloads of options for both weapons, which change your stats but don't make any visual changes, and character clothing which doesn't offer any perks in battle so it's only useful if you want to play dressup.
I still haven't beaten it as other games were more interesting to me (I bought it at the same time as Demon's Souls) but from what I did play of it I enjoyed. I'd say if it's that cheap you might as well give it a shot, you can always return it within a week if you really hate it right?
Also it has Nolan North at his best.

Trade in price is this for decent so it sounds like a no brainer hopefully i want to put the time into it, as much as i loved Valkyria chronicles still haven't finished that.
Also Nolan North makes everything great, although i doubt his alpha protocol ending will ever be topped when you get to ride off into the sunset with him.

I've been thinking about getting this for ages but the combat always put me off. It looks really weird.

It's built around positioning. You have a movement bar like Valkyria Chronicles and when you attack you have to pick a direction to move in. There are benefits to using all three characters correctly and you can do tri-attacks that rape eerything when you set them up properly.
The damage system is actually much the same as FFXIII. Generally you want to start off using rapid fire weapons to deal chip damage and possibly break armor (which is basically the same as staggering but not mandatory, it's more of a critical effect) then follow it up with harder hitting pistols to "confirm" the damage if you will. If you leave chip damage too long without following it up it'll gradually regenerate.
