can i disable gifs or sigs somewhere in preferences?

it's starting to become very inconvenient to load pages up now

If you're using a decent browser (just about anything not named IE or Safari), you could use some kind of ad blocking software to get rid of them.

i got adlblock but i'm not entirely sure how to use it...

Right click on image --> select AdBlock: Block Image (should say something like that) --> Apply Filter --> profit.

No but seriously, do you have a dial-up Internet connection or something? Even Kaio said gifs work fine for him and his jump off is IE8.

gifs are fine in moderation but some of the pages are cluttered with them

it's not just one person, it's when a lot of people with a gif in there sig are on the same page
