In this topic we will say what is the one game you think everyone should play. Now this should be a classic that everyone should be able to enjoy, if you feel like a genre specific game go ahead, but primarily lets see if we can get people to check out games they might never have considered. I'll try and play any i can get access to.
I'm sure everyone will be expecting me to pull out a beat'em up, along the lines of streets of rage, god hand, ken's rage, yakuza. A over the top explosion filled game, or possibly something like MGS which i'm obviously a huge fan of. But i put forward to you the game i think everyone should play and i think pretty much everyone would thoroughly enjoy:
Spoiler:
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
A lot of people might have guessed that i would have placed this as the game with the best storyline ever created, the story is better then books i've read, films i've watched. Hell if you watched all the dialogue scenes back to back you'd probably enjoy the experience. I jumped into the series at the second game this being the second title. The game uses an interesting approach using two anti-heroes, in two seperate series which have the same final part to there trilogy. Anyway this entails Raziel's story by far the most intersting part of the story to me, it also fills you in about the greater mythos of the universe.
Graphics at the time were mindblowing. Using an amazing mechanic where people could walk between two different plains of reality, the game used disc streaming so there were no lodaing times and you'd see the world morph in real time. Puzzles were complex, the world was huge and free roaming, using the old every place in the game has areas that you can access after you unlock certain abilities. Your enemies were vampires, fast cunning and strong with all the weaknesses you'd expect and you'd have to use your environment against them. Never had i played a game that utilised such amazing mechanics to grip you in battle, your enemies health continually regenerated, so you had to kill them before they started attacking again.
The greatest voice cast in a game ever, with brilliantly powerful voices, great writing it was a masterpiece. Soul reaver 2 was such a poor game compared to 1 but the story was so gripping i played through that game in days, it was also the sole reason for me buying a PS2! Also this is the only gaming series that left me with my mouth wide open in pure shock of what had just happened o_O. Sadly the graphics have aged so badly it probably won't have as much impact and the reality shifting will not amaze so much now. That said the gameplay is still solid and it is a great action RPG clocking in at some 40 hours. There are a lot of optional upgrades to find for your character which come in the form of a bunch of magical spells hidden in certain alters. This game is also the reason eidos bought crystal dynamics at seeing this game they literally shat themselves that lara croft would no longer be a pin up babe but raziel would in his creepy blue skinned yellow eyed jawless half naked glory.
If you don't think this sounds exciting i challenge you to watch this intro vid and not be intrigued as to what lies next:

I had a demo of that on the PS1 when I was a young lad. I used to buy the official PS mags because you'd get a free demo disc.
I remember I enjoyed the gameplay for the most part, but didn't really get anything else like the story or the character.

I think its up on PSN.
The main problem is i struggle to play old 3d games i don't mind old 2d games ut old 3d game look really shit, although looking at some old vids this looks better then i remember. I guess it being a platformer with puzzles it has aged well. The combat aspect is just a plus really.
The reality shifting though, the only game i can that has something similar is silent hill, but that wasnn't in realtime.

I might have to check it out then. Next time I buy something off the store I'll put in a little extra and buy it.
I know what you mean about the old 3d games, I tried to replay FFVIII a while back, and my eyes were bleeding it was so pixelated.

BTW you don't need to worry about me liking a niche game here, it was critically acclaimed despite it not appearing to be a widely played series:
I think there was a dreamcast version i was really hoping that would be the versino they put up on PSN sadly they opted with the PSX version, but from what i heard it didn't utilise the dreamcast that well at all.

Oh no, don't worry about that. This isn't the first time I've heard someone singing Soul Reaver's praises.

System Shock 2 because it's a better Bioshock in space, Planescape: Torment because it has one of the best videogame stories I know of, Deus Ex (with Shifter for bugfixes and some extra content) because it's awesome and, although I haven't finished it yet, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines with the latest unofficial patch is lots of fun so far.

Skies of Arcadia/Skies of Arcadia Legends...
This game was great back in the day. It's your average RPG revolving around pirates(SKY pirates to be precise) who go about doing their pilaging and such at unsuspecting victims, as well as fighting against a corrupt empire. The whole world of SoA is comprised of floating islands, which contain a lot of memorable and cool locations with different cultures and such.
The battle system is rather simple, it has your traditional attack, defend, magic/spells, run, and item choices. At the top of the screen, there's a guage that increases after each round(and can increase quicker if you use a command called focus). When the guage reaches a certain amount, you can cast your magic moves or special techniques(with some badass animations) each character has for massive damage.
Besides the normal battles, there's also airship battles. Explaining how they work is a bit difficult to describe, but it isn't a very complicated system when you actually play it yourself. The battles themselves can be fun sometimes, but they can also be a little dull considering the attack/defend/etc. animations take a little longer than they should. Most of these types of battles are optional aside for some boss airship battles, but those ones are always pretty quick to finish.
The main character, Vyse, starts off as a simple guy who is the son of a great pirate captain. After some complications where he had to go gung ho, crash into a city under rule of an evil queen, fight against soldiers and rescue his dad, he winds up deciding it was time for him to set off and get his own crew as well as help out a girl named Fina search for some crystals before the evil empire gets their hands of 'em first.
As you go through the game's story, your rank/fame goes up and you earn new titles the higher it gets. This affects certain side quests such as Bounty boss battles you can do(only available in the Gamecube version), getting new crew mates for your ship and so on. During the middle of the game, you'll wind up getting your own base, which can be decorated into specific styles. The more people you get to join your crew, the more things they can do to improve your headquaters(not to mention they give you special abilities in Airship battles).
There are, of course, a decent handful of side quests in this classic RPG. First off, there's the Discoveries side-quest. Throughout the world, there are many hidden locations, objects, nests, etc. floating around. Once you find them, you can go to a town's Pirate Guild a receive payment for your discoveries. Speaking of which, the Pirate Guild is also your source for starting Bounty quests(as mentioned before). Basically, wanted posters of evil "black pirates" become available at certain points in the story. You can accept these quests, go fight them and then collect your reward for their defeat(and most of these are cool, one of them even becomes good and opens up a restaurant).
Another side-quest(or should I say two side-quests, both also exclusive to the gamecube version as well) is collecting these creatures called Moonfish for a little girl's pet to eat. As you find and feed more of them, it grows(it looks freaking hilarious as it gets bigger and bigger). As you progress this quest, a man called Doc reveals information about an antagonist's past. Not only that, but as your fame gets higher as well, you can get a black spot at a guild and wind up fighting this tough girl who has a vendetta against Vyse(and as you fight her each time, she reveals more about Vyse's and her past as well). Her battles and the Moonfish quest tie in together once you deal with her about four times and finish feeding that little girl's pet bird-thing.
There are many other side-quests as well such as searching and fighting giant monsters that are roaming across the world, engaging with tough bosses, and so on. As you can see, the real interesting stuff are all these neat side-quests you can tackle, but the main story itself is pretty great and interesting too, especially considering all the different and unique places the main group visits throughout their adventure.
The whole game itself was a great experience for me and it's sad that many people never got to play it. Here's hoping it'll get a PSN release in the future so y'all can get your hands on it.

Yeah, it was developed by a Sega team called Sega WOW(the same people who are now busy producing the Valkyria Chronicles series), previously known as Overworks at the time Skies of Arcadia was made.

Sunset Riders
Before this Red Dead Redemption and Call of Juarez stuff, this was the best arcade game around. And also one of those four player co-op games that was on the hype during that time. Even its NES console port counterpart was great.
