At the main menu. And on top of that I'm getting a message telling me next time to turn off the system the right way. Stupid machine, stop trolling me!

i think that's the exact same thing that happened to my friend, his old one froze at the main menu and eventually the power light started flashing yellow when he tries to turn it on and it didn't work anymore....
newer gen consoles seem to get more and more fragile.....

This the first time one of my consoles dies in two years (and a month I think).

It looks like I'll have to buy a new PS3 soon. Damn, I'd rather buy shoes.

why not try send it in for repairs if it does start to flash yellow? that might be the cheaper way though it will take more time

Hmm, now it said something about the hard drive being corrupted and restoring the PS3.

Nah, it's a 40gb model. It's kinda weird though that it only freezes at the main menu and not during games or downloads.
...
Oops, it seems I forgot to back up some games.

Add ons and Games downloaded from PSN are linked to your account. So you won't lose those. Obviously if your talking about game saves if you haven't backed them up they're obviously lost.

My PS3 has now entered the Matrix!
Jokes aside, in my case the PS3 freezes after 30 minutes or so and the screen looks more like that:
Apparently, it has to do something with the GPU (or whatever is called, I hate technology). Before buying a new one, can anyone estimate the cost of getting this fixed?

They won't actually fix it will they? They'll just send you a slim one I'd expect, maybe switch the hard drives over.

If fixing via sony will probably be like 150 euros they send you a refurbed one not your one. They will give you the replacement one on the day you can ask for your one back i think but you'l have to wait like 6 weeks.

So what would you guys do? Buy a new one or send your broken to Sony?

Well a new one will most likely last longer then a refurb. You could goto a comp store and get it fixed for cheap.
Depending on its functionality you could try and trade it in and get a new slim. If you do that just remember to delete your account of your PS3. You got 30 mins of performance so that should be enough to pass there product testing.
I personally would rather a new system then a refurb the backwards compatablity would be the only thing that might make me think differently.

My backwards compatible PS3 has worked fine this whole time I've had it (Like five months after it came out). I refuse to get any other type of PS3 just because I play so many PS2 games still and I don't feel like setting up a PS2 in the mix.

chou if you haven't gotten a new one yet i just went to there online store and requested service
instead of sending it in for repairs they offered me a slim 120 Gb for 120 buck plus another 20 for shipping in exchange for the broken 60 Gb model
i dunno if its a refurb though

I haven't decided yet if I want a new one or not. To be honest, I've gotten bored of videogames and I barely buy or play anymore, so I think I should just have it repaired and buy a scarf or something.
