Forza killed it.
But I was a fan and played the hell out of 2 and 3. It was like pokemon but with cars. Lost interest at 4.

Never had any interest in driving sims. I like my racers to be very arcadey.

GT may be the most anal car sim available on console, but it's not as complete a package as Forza, and is less fun than a the likes of Burnout. It'll still have it's die hard fans, but as far as I'm concerned, I'll stick with Forza 3 thanks.

As far as I can tell it's just Gran Turismo but you don't have to wait 4 years for each release.

Some of these new features sound insane, like 200 cars individually modeled so they crumple realistically, photo real graphics
i hope the AI is improved i probably will end up ignoring this otherwise
on the old ones i got one car tuned it up a bit won most tournaments and then just got another upgraded car that covered the comps i couldn't enter
but i need a new car game seeing how burnout went to shit

Forza 3... you can really make it your own. If you want to play it as a hardcore sim, you can switch off all the driver aids, and you even get the option of manual transmission with a clutch. Not many racing games have that, at least not on console. If you want to play it as a casual arcade racer, all the aids go on, and you've even got a Burnout style 'rewind' button if you screw up. If you want anything in between, then you got it. The selection of vehicles is huge, everything from Bugatti Veyrons to 1960s city cars, there are loads of tracks, several variations on each track, great multiplayer modes and the ability to make custom vehicles with such depth that it puts any racing game I've ever played to shame.
Yeah, I like Forza 3 a lot.
It's especially fun choosing your own car, and testing out how it behaves under certain conditions... I don't plan to find out what happens in real life when I lift off mid corner in a Ford Focus ST at 120mph, but thanks to Forza 3 I know. Oh, and yes, I crash.

I have been a big fan of the Gran Turismo games on PS1 and PS2. I have every GT game that was released on them. I have to say that so far the PS3 games have left me cold. I did get GT PSP and managed to get all the cars which apparently would give me a fair number of cars in GT5 to start with. I believe GT5 has a Track Editor which does sound interesting. The inclusion of the Top Gear Track also sounds good provided the cars the TV program puts stars in, to do a Time Trial, are included in the game.
I have to say that in the current generation I prefer Forza 3. The fact you can do more than just race makes it so much better. I have painted a few cars in Forza 3 and even made a bit of money selling the designs.

Personally i prefer pure racing over boy racer type racing. I rather play with the internals of a car then add vinyls. I thought Need for Speed Shift was done pretty well. Although I would say in general racing games this gen really have not been anything special at all.

Forza 3 has externals and internals, including some engine swaps. A car's performance determines the class that it can be raced in. Tuning a car will raise its class. Upgrades pretty much reflect the range that was available in GT games, if not exceed them.
Talking of engine swaps reminds me of the "good old days" with GT1,2 and 3 where you could use an Acrion Replay code to put an engine from another car into your pride and joy! The PS1 had the advantage (providing yours had the Parallel Port) of having devices that would allow you access to the PS1's memory direct. Using that I located part of the car information that the game used for boosting performance of the AI cars so they could more easily beat you. Adjusting that took away the games advantage.
GT4 stopped all the codes though in later times with the game engine swaps and suchlike were possible. I drove the old Daimler with an engine swap at "sensible" speeds around the 'Ring!

To be fair your comparing two differnt gens games i'm sure GT5 will blow forza out of the water.

You're certain one game no one has ever really played will blow another game you've never played out of the water? Come on Buu, you know better than to spout crap like that.
GT5 will look better than Forza 3, that's a given. It's been in development for at least four years, so you'd expect nothing less. Gameplay wise, I'd expect GT5 to be much more unforgiving and inflexible, even if it's technically more accurate I doubt it'll be any more fun.

Going by what the devs are saying the attention to detail in this next game is insane the amount of time they've spent creating this game has been to make it the best game possible. There was no rushing and the developers were allowed to do what they wanted. Thats fairly rare in any game. I will expect this to have some of the best production values around. Although I still think they handle the computers AI completely shittily so that may ruin the experience somewhat.
Polyphony digital aren't the type of company to make bold statements that are beyond what they actually provide. I mean hell even the PS1 games had insane detail. They're releasing there first game for this gen 3.5 years after it started i can't think of any big name game thats ever done that off the top of my head, they usually rush to get a release quite early on in a systems life. Another thing to keep in mind is forza will by middle of next year would have released 3 games on the 360. So i personally expect more incremental improvements in standards. GT5 on the other hand has to live up to a super crazy amount of hype and i expect it to go beyond it, but admittedly this is all really assumptive.
Although i probably won't even buy this lol.

Granted, I'd love for Forza to be a little better looking; it suffers slightly graphically from a lack of anti aliasing, but it's still far from a poor looking game, it just lacks a bit of GTs polish. That said, production values and attention to detail are all well and good, but previous GT games had those as well, and they still got (rightly) criticised for not being much actual fun.

Oh if we're talking gameplay i wouldn't be suprised if forza is better, in terms of being an accurate simulation in both car destruction and individual car handling though i'm expecting GT to have all the knobs on. I mean even comparing the beta version of GT5 to F3 GT5 is insanely ahead graphically, in fact forza doesn't actually look all that impressive (i'm debating if NFS Shift actually looks better in terms of car models), and despite the physics engine which i'm sure is amazing in terms of handling and such the crashing looked a bit crap, but i think all car games suffer from that problem aside from burnout.
GT5 looks like a real car on the replay mode. Not as good in the normal racing mode, but i guess there'll be more polish come release.
Another thing is F3 has a lot more tracks so lets see if GT5 can actually deliver on the difference in cars. If those 600+ extra cars don't feel racing worthy then having less tracks would just really annoy me.

What? When you're talking about the game, why the hell would you discount the way it actually plays?
Also, I'd be amazed if GT5 is even remotely accurate when it comes to damage modelling, otherwise any crash above 30mph will end your race instantly. Realistic, but no fun whatsoever and even GT won't go that far.

I was talking about accurate simulation. I mean i admire how great GT emulates real handling and stuff, but i don't like simulations. It's like those F1 games i hated those but they were amazing in terms of what they were doing. I quite enjoyed NFS shift, and that was semi sim, as well as all those touring car games.
I think the damage modelling will be accurate, i'm sure there will be a drop in performance (accel and top speed), and you'll get veering as well post damage. I wouldn't complain if they had a mode you could turn off that your car got totalled in.

Yeah, I greatly admire the GT games, but I just can't love them, and I'm a total car nut; I spend all day working with cars and still have my 'what-if' lottery wishlist to hand most saturday nights!
It's odd really, because part of the joy of driving a real car is the feel of it, the physical sensations transmitted through the steering, the pedals, the seat; the way the car reacts to your inputs, how it rewards you (or not!) for driving smoothly, and obviously you get nothing of that experience in even the very best racing sims. Even a reasonably fast car in the real world feels mundane and slow in most games simply because you cannot replicate the majority of the sensations experienced under hard acceleration and braking.

I suppose Forza 3 and GT5 have one thing in common. The majority pf the cars were in the previous game and are just updates of those. In GT5 those cars will be the ones with no damage model. I will be intrigued to see the damage model of the new 200 or so GT5 cars when the game is released.
I'll say one thing about Forza 3. It had a definite fun factor when played online. I played online with it with a group from another forum. I remember one race at the New York track, with some chicanes on full simulation. We were driving Range Rovers (just to make it more difficult) and I think I was fairly near the back of the grid. At the first chicane there was a hug pile-up and somehow I managed to avoid all the carnage. The other cars were pretty much crippled to a greater or lesser extent, sending out clouds of smoke (damaged engines!). I cruised to victory... Admittedly we normally raced without full simulation damage to at least makes things even.
I wonder if the damage in GT5 will have the potential to be "fun"?

I'm pretty sure 400 cars are getting truly pimped damage recognition and 800 others are getting a more lazier generic damage recognition never haeard anything about some cars not even having a damage model.

I could be wrong about that. I have not read anything about the game in a while.
I thought it was only going to be 200 "special" cars or has that changed now? Not sure about the second string cars though. The PSP save would, I would have thought, have had those cars on. This does include the Veyron though. Maybe that is one of the second stringers!
I still would not be surprised to see another delay, but things do seem pretty definite.
This may be the first GT game (when I get it) that I only get the UK version of, having got all the previous games from all the regions!! That included Tourist Trophy as well. Having had (now gone unfortunately) a GT Web site I liked to "keep up" with the games. Admittedly 6 versions of GT4 did get a little silly!
