Because we've seen it all before. The best today's horror movies can hope for is to do something that's been done before, but do it really well. Like The Orphanage (alright, it's not quite a horror film, but it was awesome).
Or come up with something totally new, but that's doubtful.

And I fucking hate The Ring. Not because it wasn't decent, because it brought that whole wave of long hair ghost women.

That's part of it. It was more about the mother going a bit mad. But the end was amazing.
