I think that's what happened anyway. A lot of the dialogue had some stupid echo effect on it and I couldn't hear shit, and the subtitles were in Japanese.

When was the last time you bought (and bought in your own country, not imported) a Japanese game that didn't have subtitles? It's a Japanese demo of a Japanese game. It was surprising enough that they were speaking English.

Not really. It's known that the Devil May Cry games have always been voiced in English and since these are the same developers it'd be hard to imagine they wouldn't be doing this again.
