PS3's Blu Ray playback...

...sucks.

Well, maybe that's a little harsh. As you may know, I'm a real gadget whore, and it's often bothered me how the Blu Ray films I watch through my PS3 don't look as good as the HD DVD movies I play though my dedicated HD DVD player. Now, I'm aware that the playback on the PS2 and Xbox, while watchable, wasn't as good as that of a similarly priced DVD player, and that may be the reason for finding PS3s Blu Ray a little underwhelming.

So, with that in mind, I've bought a Sony BDP-S350 Blu Ray player, and the difference is quite pronounced. The picture is sharper, the movement more fluid, and the PS3s achilles heel, the occasional "flicker", is non existent. Finally, my Blu Ray playback is on par with my HD DVDs, and I can finally conclude that...

...well, the PS3's Blu Ray playback...it's not that great.

I'd struggle to go back to DVD now. Blu Ray or HD DVD aren't knock your socks off amazing when you first see them, but you really notice the difference when you've gotten used to them. Watching a regular DVD feels a little like watching through a pair of tights.

Heck, pop your HDTV from 720p to 480i, then try imagining that effect on your favourite movies.

But for you it's making a move backwards. For me it's just not going forward, so I don't care as much.

I quite agree, especially on a 19" inch screen, I'd say at least half of the impact would be lost due to the screen size.

Watched some TTGL on my PS3 this morning, it looked great, watched Iron Man Blu-Ray on my PS3 a while ago, coulda been better

I have to say i thought Iron Man looked pretty good on Blu Ray. Spider-Man and Spidey 2, were considerably weaker, with numerous bouts of "flickering" that didn't happen on the DVD releases.

Well, I have sold a few things recently to raise somemo ney for this. The eye surgery wason finance though,so that's not such a problem.
