In their comic time, they spent 1,000's of years trying to revive Mata Nui....
Recently, they accomplished that mission....

I stopped following Bionicle when the Piraka showed up. I really didn't like where things were going at that point, so I stopped collecting the sets; my Lego subscription ran out at that time as well, so I never bothered resubscribing.

A couple months ago, I decided to take a peek at how things were going... my response: WTF?

*Sigh* Why couldn't they just stick to the mask collecting aspect? It was cool then. But no... we need guns! And... organic appearance!

Yeah, Bionicle is dead for me. Anything past the third movie is non-canon by my standards.

Sounds like a good enough ending.

Here is a rough plot symphosis from what I can recall. A whole crap of stuff seems to be retconned since I departed from the series, so it might be "out of date".

In the time before time, the great spirit Mata Nui brought the Matoran to a paradise-like island; he also taught them the three virtues of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. In gratitude, the Matoran named their home Mata Nui, after the great spirit. However, Mata Nui's brother, the Makuta, grew jealous of these honours and betrayed him, casting a spell over Mata Nui that trapped him in a deep slumber. Makuta was then free to unleash his shadows... and unleash them he did. After a long period of oppression, six capsules washed up on the shores of Mata Nui. They were the Toa, the six elemental heroes of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Stone, and Ice. The Toa fought against Makuta's corrupted Rahi servants and attacked Makuta himself. Makuta, while bested, was not defeated, and the resulting battle awoke the ancient Bohrok swarm, an ancient horde that lived on Mata Nui before the Matoran arrived. The Toa battled the Bohrok for some time; the battle was long and hard, including a brief period where the Bohrok managed to possess Lewa, the Toa of Air, and the entire Le-Matoran tribe. The Toa eventually tracked down the Bahrag, the queens of the swarm, and defeated them. Afterwards, the Toa were submerged in protodermis, transforming them into the Toa Nuva. The Bohrok were not fully defeated, however. The Bohrok-Kal, an elite group of independant Bohrok, used trickery to sap the newly transformed Toa Nuva of their powers; they then attempted to said power to revive the swarm, but the Toa Nuva turned the tables, feeding the Bohrok-Kal so much power that their own powers went out of control and destroyed themselves. Some time after this, the Matoran chronicler Takua happens across the Mask of Light, which can only be worn by a secret seventh Toa. Takua and Jaller, his best friend, go to search for the Toa of Light, all the while evading Makuta's "sons", the Rahkshi. Eventually, Takua realizes that he himself is destined to become said Toa, putting on the mask and transforming into Takanuva. Takanuva then follows the Rahkshi to Makuta, defeating the dark spirit. In doing so, the path to Metru Nui, the original home of the Matoran, is revealed.

Eh... I've covered the original storyline; I'll cover the Metru Nui storyline later.

Matoran live on Metru Nui. Six Matoran become Toa. Toa are hunted by Turaga (village elder) and his minions. Turaga turns out to be Makuta. Makuta puts Mata Nui to sleep. Toa incapacitate Makuta. Toa flee with Matoran to Mata Nui (the island). Toa go back for rest of Matoran. Monsters infest Metru Nui. Toa get infected and change into different kind of Toa. Toa defeat monsters and return to normal. Toa awaken the rescued Matoran (who were sleeping in capsules), transforming themselves into actual Turaga in the process. Makuta is freed and begins his reign of terror on the isle of Mata Nui.

And after that, I lost interest in the series.
