DBZ episode 16

Japanese title: “Run ,Gohan! Longing for Mount Paozu, Where Chichi is Waiting”
English title: “Plight of the Children”

General stuff:

- Chiko is 5 years old in the original, but 6 years old in the dub.

- In the dub Pigeroe abandons the kids because he wants them to have a real home. In the original it’s because he’s turning them into delinquents.

Verdict:

9.5/10

DBZ episode 17

Japanese title: “City of No Tomorrow! The Long Road to Victory”
English title: “Pendulum Room Peril”

General stuff:

In the original the combined powerlevel of Krillin, Tien, Chaozu and Yamcha is 1507. In the dub it’s 1510.

Changed lines:

Yamucha wrote:
An extra-large Sokidan!

Yamcha wrote:
Spirit Bomb!

Still deciding on if I should make a funny comment directed towards the Japanese line or rant on Funi for giving Yamcha the Spirit Bomb.

Verdict:

8/10.

DBZ episode 18

Japanese title: “Last Stop on the Serpentine Road! Are you Kaio-sama?”
English title: “The End of Snakeway”

General stuff:

- Piccolo calls Gohan by his name all the time in this episode. In actuality, he only calls him dirty brat, brat, and other variations. But never his real name.

- That shitty computer voice only talks a few times in the Japanese version. Not all the time like in the dub.

- Dub Roshi at one point says that they finally got the Dragonballs with two months to spare. This means that Goku has already been dead for 10 months. In the Japanese version it’s been 6 months since Goku’s death. The actual dub contradiction will reveal itself in the next episode.

- Kaio’s voice has been utterly ruined in the dub. He sounds like a joke and his voice is an insult to my ears and those of others. I can’t stand listening to it. For people who never heard the Japanese version of Kaio’s voice: it’s a very wise voice, which can be funny at the same time. It’s SOOOO much better than that lispy troll that is in the Funi dub.

Changed lines:

Goku wrote:
Oh boy. Sir Isaac Newton would never have told the tale of one of those apples had hit him.

Okay. What the fuck is this?! 1)Newton never existed in the Dragonball universe. 2) Goku is WAY too stupid to know about Newton anyway. 3) Even IF Goku knew about such a man he would never call them by their correct title (Sir). This dubline is just plain hideous, out of character, bullshit nonsense. Away with it.

Verdict:

4/10 for an all around pretty awful experience.

DBZ episode 19

Japanese title: “The Battle with Gravity! Catch Bubbles-kun”
English title: “Defying Gravity”

General stuff:

- The saiyans will arrive in 158 days in the Japanese version. In the English version it’s 88 days. Not only is that a dub mistake in itself, it also contradicts the fact that Goku ONLY HAD 2 MONTHS LEFT IN THE PREVIOUS EPISODE.

- 158 days on Kaio’s planet is equivalent to 1000 years of training on Earth. 88 days on King Kai’s planet is equivalent to several 1000 years on Earth. K.

- Kaio doesn’t mention the Kaio-ken technique in this episode like he should.

Verdict:

6.5/10

DBZ episode 20

Japanese title: “The Saiyan Legend Reborn! Goku’s Roots”
English title: “Goku’s Ancestors”

General stuff:

- The fact that it took 2 weeks for Goku to hit Gregory isn’t mentioned in the dub.

- The Kaio-ken is mentioned for the first time in the dub.

- After Gregory was hit Kaio mentions there are 118 days left. In the dub it’s 70 days.
Name change:

Tsufuru-jin is changed to Tuffle. This is notable, because Tsufuru means Fruit. Vegetables VS Fruit. Name pun is killed in the dub.

Changed lines:

*while Gohan is punching Piccolo relentlessly*

Japanese Piccolo wrote:
All right, that’s it! You’re starting to control your ki!

English Piccolo wrote:
No, attack! Don’t just dodge! Use your strength!

Not only is Piccolo’s compliment changed to criticism in the dub, it also makes no sense because Gohan IS attacking. >_>

Verdict:

7/10.

DBZ episode 21

Japanese title: “Come Forth, Shen Long! The Saiyans Finally Arrive on Earth”
English title: Counting Down”

General stuff:

Goku nveer finds out that he’s wearing Kaio’s symbol now too. In the dub, he can’t shut up about its greatness.

Changed lines:

Japanese Goku wrote:
I was worried that my clothes would look ugly, like yours, Kaio-sama!

English Goku wrote:
...although I was hoping that since I’ve been training under you I’d get to wear your symbol now, y’know.

Well that’s kind of a change.

Verdict:

9/10.

DBZ episode 22

Japanese title: “Unbelievable! Saibamen, Born of the Soil”
English title: “The Darkest Day”

General stuff:

- Piccolo and Gohan are called the highest powers on the planet in the dub. In the original they are just mentioned as two fairly high powers and that only Piccolo has the highest battle power on the planet.

- Gohan and Piccolo both call Krillin by his name in the dub. In the original Gohan didn’t know Krillin’s name anymore and asks for it later and Piccolo, of course, doesn’t call him by his name at all.

- Powerlevels are changed again. Gohan’s powerlevel is changed from 981 to 1000, Piccolo’s is changed from 1220 to 1400 and Krillin’s is changed from 1083 to 1100.

Verdict:

8/10

DBZ episode 23

Japanese title: “Yamucha Dies! The Terror of the Saibaimen”
English title: “Saibamen Attack!”

General stuff:

- In the original, Yamcha is recognised as one of the regulars from the Tenkaichi Budokai. Piccolo is also recognised as Piccolo Daimao.

Verdict:

9.8/10

DBZ episode 24

Japanese title: “Farewell, Ten-san! Chaozu’s Suicide Strategy”
English title: The Power of Nappa”

General stuff:

- Nobody mentions that, even though Krillin’s attack is very strong, it’s also very slow.

Verdict:

9.8/10

DBZ episode 25

Japanese title: “Tenshinhan Cries Out!! This is My Final Kikoho”
English title: “Sacrifice”

General stuff:

The dialogue right before Tien’s death is somewhat changed, but still keeps the same meaning.

That’s it.

Verdict:

DBZ episode 26

Japanese title: “An Intense Three-Hour Delay! The Kinto Un Bullet-Express”
English title: “Nappa’s Rampage”

This is again a very well dubbed episode.

DBZ episode 27

Japanese title: “Leave it to Me! Gohan’s Great Burst of Anger”
English title: “Nimbus Speed”

General stuff:

- In the dub Vegeta doesn’t mention that Goku will arrive within 4 minutes, like he should.

- The little monolgue in Piccolo’s flashback where he says he’ll always protect Gohan doesn’t exist in the original.

Verdict:

9/10

DBZ episode 28

Japanese title: Ferocity of the Saiyans! Kami-sama and Piccolo Both Die”
English title: “Goku’s Arrival”

General stuff:

- Piccolo’s last words were drastically changed in the dub. His first words after getting hit by Nappa’s attack are “Get out of here, Gohan!” (instead of “I’m fine, not a scratch..”). After that he continously urges Gohan to get out of there while he still can, while in the dub he wants Gohan to stay and fight. Meanwhile Kami’s dialogue is also changed as his words about Piccolo even surpassing him before his death are blatantly cut out! Then there’s some difference between Piccolo’s very last words. In the original it’s “Don’t you die, Gohan”, while in the dub it’s “Goodbye, my friend.”

Overall I think there was too much change in Piccolo and Kami’s death.

- Gohan’s Masenko has a PL of 2800, not “over 3000”. Of course this is nothing compared to that PL that’ll appear later in this episode.

- To stay in line with Piccolo’s last message, instead of commenting that he doesn’t have the power to run away anymore, Gohan says that he won’t run away because Piccolo’s counting in him. Yeah....

- The gut punch Goku deals to Nappa at the end of the episode is Chaozu, not for all of Goku’s friends. Goku’s next attacks will all be for one of his friends.

Changed lines:

Japanese Vegeta wrote:
Battle power 7000... 8000... impossible!

English Vegeta wrote:
Powerlevel’s 8000... how?! Wait! It’s over 9....

Yep, it’s coming.

Japanese Vegeta wrote:
Japanese Nappa wrote:
What is Kakkarot’s battle power!?
Higher than 8000!

English Vegeta wrote:
English Nappa wrote:
Vegeta! What did you say his powerlevel is?
It’s over 9000!!!

Seriously. How the FUCK can you do this wrong?! 8000 = 8000. There is no need to round this shit off like with the other powerlevels. But they just changed it to 9000. It makes no fucking sense. And not only did they do it once, they did it TWICE! I mean how stupid can you get?! As stupid as Funimation? Wrong! As stupid as the fagcunts who still lolol at Kajetokun’s stupid fad and think it’s dah pwnage and dah shit (Barry).

It’s over 8000. Not 9000. Now shut the fuck up about it.

Verdict

9001/10000000. lolol

P.S. I’m not really good with rants. Maybe Sarbud should give his own opinion on 9000.

DBZ episode 29

Japanese title: “Father is Awesome! Kaio-ken, the Ultimate Finishing Technique”
English title: “Lesson Number One”

General stuff:

- The first punch Goku deals in this episode is for Yamcha. Dub Goku doesn’t talk here. The following attack, an axe-hammer (lol I don’t know what it’s supposed to be called), is for Tenshinhan. Dub Goku says it’s for Piccolo though. Then the last attack, a kick, was originally for Piccolo, but in the dub it’s for Yamcha.

- The Kaio-ken attack is mispronounced. It’s Kaio, not Kayo.

- In the dub, it’s never explained why Goku and Vegeta moved: to not mess up the dead bodies of the others. They also don’t mention that everyone is dead for good, but that Krillin still has a plan left.

Changed lines:

Dub Nappa wrote:
I was commander and chief of the whole saiyan army!

LOL dubline.

Japanese Vegeta wrote:
H-he defused it with just a kiai shout?!

Dub Vegeta wrote:
How was that pathetic fool able to stop that?!

So while Japanese Vegeta knows what’s going on, English Vegeta is clueless.

Dub Goku wrote:
Kaio-ken attack!!!

It’s not an attack.

Verdict:

6/10

DBZ episode 30

Japanese title: “A Hot Unbounded Battle! Goku vs. Vegeta”
English title: “Goku vs Vegeta”

General stuff:

- The ones who already played BT2 and 3 already know this, but there’s been some huuuge tinkering with Vegeta and Goku’s talk before they fight. In the original Vegeta talks about how Goku is a left-behind send to Earth. Goku responds by saying he’s grateful for being sent to Earth and that with enough hard work even a left-behind can surpass an elite. Vegeta laughs and the battle starts. In the dub Vegeta offers Goku an offer he can’t refuse (NO HE DOESN’T SAY THAT LITERALLY THIS TIME). Goku responds by saying that he has everything he wants on Earth and declines. Vegeta laughs and the battle starts.

- Vegeta saying that he has encoutered something like the kaio-ken before is, of course, a dubline.

Verdict:

6.5/10

DBZ episode 31

Japanese title: “Now, Goku! A Final Technique With Everything On the Line”
English title: “Saiyan Sized Secret”

General stuff

- Dub Vegeta doesn’t mention that his power will drop after doing the Power Ball, nor does he mention the amount of Zenos it takes for the transformation to take place. (17 million)

Verdict:

9/10.
