| Really good film, another notch in Tarantino's belt. It's about bounty hunting and slavers. Set in the very late 1850s. I enjoyed it a lot, especially Leo DiCaprio's character, he gave a good performance. I also liked the beards to main character ratio, it was quite high (100%). My only gripe with it was somewhat pedantic but that's what I get for studying history. Some woman in America was playing Fur Elise almost 10 years before it was published. While admittedly not impossible, it's so damn unlikely that I didn't like it. Anyway, had a fantastic end, my favourite movie so far this year. | |

| I was massively disappointed in Django. Schultz is a fucking terrible character, the movie throws around the N-Word like it's going out of style, the last 30 minutes of the movie were unnecessary, and the character of Stephen is a completely unneeded character who also has nothing answered about him and literally only exists because "We had to get Samuel L. Jackson into this movie because he's been a Tarantino actor since Pulp Fiction."
The first half of the movie is really good, DiCaprio's character is great and he does a fucking phenomenal job, especially with a scene near the end of the movie which is the best scene in the whole movie and everything moves along very well, but the second half shits the bed so fucking hard.

| DiCaprio is only in the second half, and him being in it is what makes it good. There was a period of time where it definitely seemed like they could have cut some shit out, for instance they could have cut the whole part from "Cock-a-doodle-doo, blackie." to the scene with the Australian and the other two guys, but oh well, what are you gonna do?
I'm pretty sure Stephen is there because a) those kind of people existed then, and so he's needed to fit that demographic and b) the thing he told DiCaprio to further the plot.
What's wrong with Shultz, he's just trying to help a brother out.

| - Spoiler:
Calvin Candie is a great character, but he does not save what is the second half of the movie. It is a slog to get through because of how slowly everything goes along and the fact that the two main characters stop being central to moving the story along so it stops being about them and becomes a story about Candie more than anything else.
Schultz is a bad character because not only does he essentially go through three characters throughout the movie, the movie tries to treat him as if he is morally superior to Calvin Candie. When not only earlier in the movie Schultz threatened to enslave Django if he didn't do it, but teaches him how to kill without remorse and even helps him kill a man in front of his own son. Then Schultz extends the movie 30 minutes longer than it needs to be because he has a moment where HE CAN'T LET THAT DASTARDLY CALVIN CANDIE LIVE, despite being as morally shitty as Calvin. It's even worse because there was no reason for any of that to have happened. They got Broomhilda, they were able to just walk out of Candieland no strings attached at that point and never have to see Calvin again, but NOPE Schultz just kills him anyways.
I think Stephen is actually worse than Schultz. The character comes in the latter part of the second half, with no build-up whatsoever and he's supposed to be treated as if he is not only the mastermind behind Calvin, but the brains in the house too. Fuck you, Quentin Tarantino. This character not only pops up out of nowhere, but he's treated as both a god damned idiot and a fucking genius in the same breath. You cannot have your cake and eat it, he's either gotta be the mastermind or the yes man, you cannot have both especially with how poorly handled the character was. There was also no reason for him to even exist, his only purpose in the movie is to let Calvin know about the shit going on with Django and that could be easily resolved by just making Calvin a bit more observant and less vain, there was no reason why that character had to exist. Especially since by the point he's in the movie the use of the n-word has become offensive and that character in and of itself is pushing the limit.
And really, historical accuracy is not Quentin Tarantino's strong point. He literally tosses shit into the movie just because he feels like it. Dynamite did not exist back at that point, more slaves were trying to escape and revolt than what we see, and some of the fashion in the movie is literally only added to make Calvin and Co. seem more eccentric.
The movie wasn't bad, but holy shit this has gotta be the most uncomfortable movie I've had to sit through this year, especially since the first half of the movie is so good and the second half is terrible, it ruined the movie for me.

Yeah, I think that's to show that Schultz isn't really a good guy either. Despite them having Brunhilde already, shooting the guy was completely unnecessary for a hero, but he's blatantly not a hero since he's a goddamn bounty hunter, he's just in it for the money too.
I don't know where you got that Stephen was the puppet master from, there's only one scene in which he appears smart and that was probably just to further the plot. I think it was just to show how caught up in the deal Candie is. I think you just read into it a little. Calvin being vain is probably vital to his character.
And you're right, now that I think about it dynamite was the mid to late 1860s too.

| I was going to see this movie but then I heard it was racist against whites and Jamie Foxx is an illuminati puppet. | |

| saw it yesterday, absolutely loved it. wasn't bored for a second.
I get what people didn't like about the second part though, but to be honest, it didn't bother me. I was thoroughly entertained.

| The movie is really good, enjoyed most of it a lot Last 45 minutes felt like it was stretching the movie a bit too long, just for the sake of stretching it, but not without its moments | |
