The 3rd movie from Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost.

This was fantastic. Every bit as good as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Maybe better.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this.

So this ended up being really amazing.

I finally got around to watching it as well.

It was a good movie but it's probably my least favorite of the trilogy. It's got a great story, some great characters, great acting (especially from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who have really grown since the days of Spaced), but I don't think it has the inherent depth of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead where you could rewatch it a dozen times and catch something new each time. It also wasn't as funny as I was hoping, though it still had some great laughs (Andy putting his hand through the glass window, "Why don't you get back in your rocket and fuck off back to Lego Land?"). I almost felt like there were too many characters in the core group, and that the first hour or so was just spent introducing them.

I am so glad that I completely avoided all the hype for this move, so I went into the movie without knowing it was bodysnatching robots. Other than the trailers all spoiling way too much and being really awful, it meant I was able to go into the movie blind and appreciate it a lot more.

What surprised me most was how dark it was. Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead flirted with black comedy and had moments of deep poignancy, but The World's End seemed to be nothing but. That's not a bad thing (though the traditional trilogy structure suggest the darkest chapter is usually the second), but the movie felt very reminiscent of the "disenfranchised white male" genre of the 90s (eg. Office Space, Falling Down and Fight Club). I loved Gary's arc but I don't really have any desire to watch it again. I tried doing a rewatch already and I just couldn't get into it.

One thing I kind of liked was the way it was very aware of how dark it was for a while but by the time the confrontation with the network comes around it doesn't really give a shit about being overtly dark any more. It's still there, just under the surface.

There's a bit more though, there's a point where they talk about the five musketeers being better than 3 because they could lose two and still have three - which is what happens to the gang. And I'd have to check but I'm pretty sure Martin Freeman's character and the other one who dies do so at the same point in the crawl as they stopped in the previous attempt. In fact, I think pretty much everything in that intro was recreated in some form. I'm sure there's more than that, as I have only seen it the once still.

I pretty much felt the same way after seeing it a while back. Still a somewhat enjoyable film, though. The ending was reminiscent of SotD's where people are making use of the remaining mooks from the main conflict(Zombies in Shaun, robots in this), only ramped up to post-apocalyptic levels and everyone actually adapting to new ways of life(save for the robot versions of the main group which are just doing what their original counterparts did when they were alive). Funny stuff.
