They may have been child oriented, but it still attracted the attention of adult audiences. But I guess you only watched the movies (and this is a movie topic after all so I don't blame you), because it's commonly known that, especially the first two films, were incredibly downplayed so that kiddies could enjoy it more.

Even then I don't see why it being for kids is a negative. Shonen anime is aimed at kids too.
